In many Hollywood films, there is a trope giving female Asian characters color in their hair. This is used to symbolize rebelliousness in media. Adrienne Rich discusses in her work how society views homosexuality as "deviant and abhorrent." Society views it as straying away from normativity and therefore, dangerous. This idea is shown through this trope, viewing these female Asian women as dangerous and straying away from normativity. This is dangerous for viewers because it constrains them to a box to fit in.

I had an interview with a close black friend of mine who is a film student at the University of South Carolina. We talked about representation in film and media and this is what they had to say when talking about coming of age movies.

"I think especially as someone that enjoys coming of age movies, it can feel, I don't want to say frustrating, but I can consume and relate to movies like Ladybird(2017) or the aesthetic of girlhood movies. But, at the same time, I'm not seeing myself and I think especially with coming of age, that is one of the formative times of your life. All of these universal experiences that we have don't just happen to white people."

Transgender Representation

Transgender representation has been lacking and non-existent in mainstream media and Hollywood. When there is representation, there is also continuous hatred that comes with that. One of the first memories I have of transgender representation is in the TV show, The Umbrella Academy(2019). The actor Elliot Page transitioned and his character transitioned with him.
