We started the day off with a lecture about part 2. Then we did our research presentation, but we had technical issues and that took a long time to be fixed, so by lunch break only 3 out of 18 students had presented it. We had to spend almost the entire second half finishing the presentations and then we had 20 minutes to start building our instrument.
Despite all the issues and being tired for taking so long, there were really nice research pieces, for example Pedro's Ratatouille representation of taste and sound with visuals, i did not remember that from the movie and had a lot to do with our project. Since i got a famous video in one of my 3 researchs a couple other people had the same video, but i read a lot about it because i am really interested in science, so i had a few more details to add.

Since we had problems with the presentations yesterday and no time to make our instruments, we did it today for almost the whole day.
We got separated in groups, 4 people total, 2 from each pathway and we could not chose or negotiate the groups, and that made almost all my enthusiasm go away, combined with discovering that the animation/video will also be made in these groups. Despite that i made diffefent experiments with boxes and Pringles tubes and ended up with some kind of string instrument using elastics and a box.
We lacked that in our group so i thought i could fill this gap in. Everyone helped everyone, so i am not complaining about my group.
After that we had half an hour to make an action plan for the rest of the project.
Since i was excited about the animation everybody agreed to make me responsible for it, after we make our storyboard.
We basically have 3 tasks, finishing the instruments. Recording the audio. Making the Graphic Score and Animation. Which are all the outcomes required for the project

Me and a few friends went to Centro Cultural São Paulo, unfortunately it was early and did not have much to be seen, but we got back to EBAC to finish our instruments and try to decide what will be done tomorrow on the presentation.
My group did not organize it well and we could only see 2 instruments playing together, but we recorded everyone's instrument regardless so i can use them independently on the editing.

My group did not have anything in mind, but thankfully it all worked out and we managed to make a nice one.
The hardest part was to create a rhythm, but after that the others started joining on the same pace and by the end, its all at the same time, so we plan to represent that by having a lot of visual elements on the video.
I asked to do the video because i was happy about it when i read the brief, everyone agreed since i have the most experience with editing, but everyone will do the storyboard tomorrow, so its not only me doing it.

During the morning i was at the After effects workshop with Kevin, i did not learn anything new, but it was fun anyway. In the afternoon i helped my group with the Graphic Score identity, so i could start the video on the weekend. The design i made still need improvements but its a good starting point, it had a pyramid shape, that resembles a speaker or audio wave, because our 1 minute music follows this pattern, starts slow with one instrument and the other join in and it gets messy. I chose a half circle shape for my instrument, because of the elastics, when played they wave around and it has that shape. The other instruments i also represented following this thought.

So since i had free time i told them i could also make the video be a loop. Its simple but took some time.
Also added research that i wrote about on my phone because i didnt have time at the moment, but now rhe references are there.
The rest of the say i spent helping friends from other groups with software issues, which actually makes me happy because its one of the only projects where we are expected to use it.
I think my time management is really good because i always have time to improve my works after im done and help others.

I also help with camera angles and what footage he needs so its easier to edit it later.
For myself i started a new animation, related to the project but not with my group, alone, as i thought the project would be. It's like a rhythm game, as i posted references in my research, but in form of a video, as if you were watching someone play it.
The way its gonna work is that you have 4 layers horizontally divided, each is an instrument and according to the song you press it.
I chose some sort of beat and im trying to reproduce it with the instruments we made so i have a proper song to be played.

Overall everyone worked well despite no one being close friends and we managed to finish and tie everything up.
Now about the display, we had a few problems to solve, like displaying the screen print graphic score on the wall, but there were no walls available so we used the window instead, and there are a few transparent paper, so the tac we used to glue it appeared. We solved it by using it on the printed parts, which were black, so it didnt appear and used really small pieces of tape on the corners.

The crit went well, the feedback was mostly positive.
Most comments were about the graphic score and animation, which made me happy because i played big part on both. I think the graphic score was very visual and interesting to see, maybe because of the black/white contrast and simple elements making more complex shapes. The animation i can't speak too much because i worked so much on it, so i lost track of criticism, but all i got was positive feedback, so that's what i got from it.
The display was in a window, using different papers printed with silkscreen, a few on transparent paper, a few on white paper, black paper, newsprint.
Negative feedback was about the relation between instruments and band logo with the rest of the visual identity, i agree, i didn't take part in creating it but i didn't have much to do with the rest.

During our scenography lecture i started thinking more about how i would portray my character, which is Creative, so i though of lots of hand movements, some sort of confident walk. And for the scenary i would make separate buildings and them composite them together in after effects, so i could edit them individually and create the effects i want for each one, for example changing colors in one, making one rise from the ground on another.
Also im getting used to using my sketchbook more, so i have now more pages with only 2 projecte than i had in part 1. I would't do it if i were doing something alone, but we have to show our thoughts to the tutors, so i guess i should improve even more.

I decided to make each building different from each other, for example one looks like a professional one, the other like a children's drawing for example.
The point was to make something like Inception, with the city bending and distorting but unfortunately we have to make things mannualy, so i will make buildings separatedely and composite them afterwards, this way i can include it on my portfolio as something useful for B.A and accomplish the project goal.
I also made a few tests in AE and PS with random building photos just to make sure i knew how to do what i was thinking, thankfully i know.

Since i only went to EBAC on monday this week due to the fuel issue, i'll be writing it on a single post, because i did everything little bit a by little bit each day. So i'll just gather up my notes and everything i wrote and put it together with some more thought.

I started the week by recording my performance, which as i had thought, was me walking then moving my hands, as if i was creating things. I had to leave earlier because of my bus, so when i got home i started to edit it. The green screen was an issue, because there were two green tones, so using a double keyer took longer than i expected and was really tiring to do.
Another issue is that i had not done my scenography yet, because i sent an email to Michael asking if i could do it digitally, since i had found an interesting result with a test. He replied that it was ok, so i started working on it. They way i did it was really simple, but created a nice effect of animation in my opinion. It's just a few layers of the same drawing, but with slight modifications, so when you put them one after the other it's easily noticeable. Also i put it in a black background because the white one (that should represent the paper where you have ideas) hurts the eye a little. I had no problems in the editing part, because it's what i do best, but i had a few important decisions. For example deciding to change from colored flashes as a transition to a bunch of lines, the transition represents the person having an idea. According to my friends' feedback, the colored flashes were too bright and was also annoying to watch, so i found this bunch of scrambled lines much better, and also creates this feeling of something being thought.
The result is me creating buildings as i walk down a street, the street is the line of thought, and i have ideas allong the way. I used shakes and twitches to make the building rising from the ground not static, and to add even more to this "living drawing" theme.

We went to 2 galleries, the first one was all about sculptures, which is understandable because of our briefing, but it was really "fine arts directed", which is an area i dont likeso i dint really enjoy it. The second one was more about movement and photography, so i could appreciate that a little bit more. The display was a timeline-like style, so you could percieve it as movement.

After lunch we had an introduction to the briefing, i started having ideas, one of them was a tree, but the tree is falling. So i had the idea of using copper wire, which is used for tree models so it looks good and sustains the weight.
Another idea was a waving flag, i thought of 3 materials for that, a thin metal plate, so i could bend it easily, also plastic, so it could be heated and bent. Perhaps using fabric, and then use white glue in various layers until its hard enough.

The crit was smooth and not tiring. Each student made someone else's crit, so you had to learn about their work and speak for them. Also from recieving feedback i understood my work was a good one, with an interesting concept and well executed, like using the animation for the scenery worked well. Thomas did my crit, and he pointed out that my sketchbook should be more detailed and with more explanations of what i was thinking. That is a little bit hard for me, because on top of not being used to using a sketchbook i also have to translate my thoughts into words, also something i'm not really good at. So that's another challenge, but i already knew since part 1 that it needed to improve, and it has quite a lot, to be honest. I'm happy with the improvement i've made so far with only 2 projects in part two.

He showed us all the practices that use photogammetry and how its becoming more and more integrated to the market.
After that we had an exercise with Sol, 15 ideas in 15 minutes, and then develop 3 ideas in half an our each. I think it was really not useful, mainly because we are on thursday...almost one week in the project and we have nothing yet. It would be nice to work on our sculpture instead. We also had some time to do the action plan, which ill finish at home. There is still another outcome, the video/3D model that no one seems to care, because we have a week now to do both physical and digital outcomes. :)

Final day of the first week, and we finally got to start working on our objects. This week has been really bad time managed in my opinion. Anyway, i cut my copper wire from 30 to 30 centimeters, because i wanted to have some room in the beggining and end for roots and branches, put them all together and twisted them as hard as i could so they would be "together" as one big wire
interlaced. I just put the roots aside and didn't pay much attention to them because i will use a clay base so it looks like the roots are actually in the ground and it will give more balance for my sculpture when i cut the log.
The branches were the hardest part, but not too much, because there is no rule, you just do it as you feel, take a wire, split it in half, make it thinner, then it starts to look like a branch. In the picture below you can see half the tree with branches i worked on and half as it was. It makes a big difference.

Also on the morning we had a awesome Maya wokshop with Eduardo, a B.A student. He said it was his first time teaching so he was nervous, but i truly think he managed it very well and i believe everyone understood what he had to say without much difficulties despite being a new software for many.
I have little experience with Maya, so i could pick up many shortcuts and tips that he had. But i won't use it to make a 3D model this time, the tree is way too complicated and even if i managed to do it, wouldn't be in time.
I plan on using photogammetry to have a model to start with, then i can work only on polishing it.

Second week, and i had my 3D object ready. Just need to cut it, but that is for tomorrow.
Today i used clay to make a base for my tree, it helps with sustain and gives a ground/earth looking to it, which also helps with the tree idea.
I thought about putting some kind of grass looking thing to make it look better, but im not sure it will help, i kind of like the ground as it is now.
I also corrected my action plan, i planned a longer time to do my tree, and in the end it was faster than i thought, so now i have more time to think about the digital outcome.

I think i will have a few problems with a 3D model, but i already knew that, that's why i wanted to do photogammetry, but i'll see tomorrow how that will work.
For 3D i had to model each part of the breaking point individually, so that would take a loooong while had i done it all in there.

I decided i would do the photogammetry today. I could already think of a few things that could go wrong, but i could only confirm it after ReCap did it's job.
First issue is that it only allows up to 100 photos, so i had around 150 i couldn't use, i chose the best 100 but it probabily wasn't enough.
The main issue is that copper reflects light, so in each picture the reflection is in a different place. That made it really hard to detect the thin branches and it created kind of a mess up there.
There were a few really good parts, like the base. Either way, it created some interesting textures, i guess i want to show it for the effort it took even thought it's not really good.

Unfortunately today i had life drawing after class, which always takes up a good amount of time. Anyway, I don't have much to do today, so it ended up being a day to make my display. Sol gave me some advice and said that my tree wouldn't have much impact on a table, because it wouldn't look fragile, or that it's about to fall.
So i found out a cardboard tube around the studio, and thought of putting my tree on top of it, the problem was: it was kinda thin and not very straight in the tips, so it could fall at any moment. I had to saw the bases in an X and put very hard cardboard to create a solid base that wouldn't wiggle around. It took a while to do but i guess it was worth it, even thought it has a rough look to it.

The crit took all day instead of half of it, so it was really tiring. But it was nice, the way Cézar did it was that you couldn't say anything about your project, people have to "guess" and give you feedback, you can only explain at the end.
Everyone participated and gave good feedback. He also made us record the audio, so we had that feedback and could use it to write about it here.
I agree with everything that was said during my crit, the main thing is that i only did 1 object, which means, only those materials were used and i didn't experiment with a range. Honestly, i don't like doing manual things, but that wouldn't help me with my portfolio anyway, so i'm not highly concerned about it.
Next thing is the base i created to put my tree on top, in the end everyone agreed it was a good choice, but the roughness could use a little improvement, and since we had one day to prepare, it was a good effort and it paid off. I'm happy about my sketchbook, i think it has improved a loooot since part 1, that is clear.
Also my digital outcome, for the first time wasn't the best outcome. My object was very well done, and i really like how it turned out. Plus the photogammetry that kind of worked, but kinda didn't, people seemed to like it anyways, since it was 3D and you could move it around in the software.

The rest of the day i spent at the BIG Festival, where i watched Kevin's lecture about triple A games. Also Unreal's lecture was underwhelming, nothing said was interesting. The last one i watched was about VFX in Canada, which looked like a turism advertisement and nothing was said about the market, so i guess the lectures weren't very useful. And to be honest the games were not that good as well, maybe a couple were interesting and had good ideas.

I worked on pretty much the same both days so i'll write them on the same entry.
Since i had changed my mind so many times this project in just two days, i was a little bit lost with all the research. What i decided to do was a kind of demo reel with all the "outcomes" i did the past 2 days pf the project.
The problem was: how do i put them together so they fit and don't look out of place and disconnected?
That was a challenge, and by the end of thursday i think i did not manage to do that. Some clips, like the dragon one had nothing to do with the rest, aside from the colors.
I know we are going to do a self-crit tomorrow so i can explain and think better about how it could have gone better, or how i could have organized myself better in order to accomplish something.
Another interesting thing that happened was about a plug-in to make water easier to recreate. But the hard part was to configure it, the program already gives you the 3D geometry, but you have to adjust/create lighting, wind movement, blur, even texture sometimes.

Self Assessment
When i wrote my rationale, i wanted to redo the Sound and Vision project. Since it was a group project i couldn't just do what i wanted, so that was my intention now. Instead of using intruments we had done ourselves, i would just edit and mix simple sounds into a music and then develop visuals accordingly.
But right on the first day i found out that editing and mixing sound in this level is pretty boring, in my opinion. Editing the pitch and amplitude, for example, takes a while, and that wasn't what i wanted.
So i started researching about things gthat i was interested at that time, not necessarily regarding the project, like Motion Capture. It has to do more with Moving Sculptures, since it's a representation of movement in a way. That led me to read about format extensions used for that, effects that can be applied, a few artists who used it for their videos. And it's very interesting. But then it led me to a particular effect that i had seen been used with MoCap, which is just simple particles but using Fractal Noise to make them move in 3D space. I did not know what Fractal Noise was, and turns out it's one of the most versatile and useful effects you can make in After Effects and other softwares as well. You can manipulate it to create amazing things, like a realistic looking eye, or maybe a star, particles, even water.
So continuing my research journey, i got into the water thing, and i found out a very good plug-in for it called Psunami, from Trapcode. It's very useful and it does a lot of job for you, fro example creating all the 3D geometry, but setting everything else is a little bit time consuming still. Lighting, texture, water movement, all that. But it created a pretty good effect and i'm sure i can explore it further with more time.
But after all that research and tests, i did not complete the briefing, and it was one i did myself. After thinking about why, i got to 2 reasons. First is that i was used to 2 week projects, i think i got a little bit lost, and i had one day less because i was at the BIG Festival, but even so it surprised me, because usually my time management is pretty good. And the main reason, i did the opposite of other projects, and researched too much. It'd actually never too much, but you need to balance it with the deadline, which i did not do. I guess i didn't take the deadline too seriously because i could continue it during vacations.
Aside from that, i also need to translate better all that research into the Research Padlet, since i don't have many entries even thought i read and saw a lot of things for this project.
This week, for me, was like a research week, but also with classes. My final outcome was just all of the smaller outcomes i had while making tests with differents effects and techniques put together with a instrumental song i like a lot. There is no connection between the music and the visual, and even the connection of the video elements itself is only the path i did while getting deeper and deeper into each effect.

Vacation project - Souvenir reflection

When we got the project i thought of those "holographgic" cards, that depending on the way you look it's a different image. That reminded me of VFX and was something physical that i could have on my full of videos portfolio. After researching for a few days i found out this effect is called Lenticular and there are a few processes to make it. None of them were too complicated, except you need a "lens", or a certain type of plastic sheet that has stripes on it, so it blocks the vision depending on the way you look. And i have no idea where to get it. So i decided to think of something else. And that got me stuck for a while. But eventually i came to what i spent most of my vacation on, which are video games.
Putting it together, i wanted a physical souvenir, and from something i liked and spent time on. So i chose a card game i played a lot, called Slay the Spire and decided to make a custom card. Since it's a souvenir i thought i could be kind of a joke, or something a little bit funny, something cool. My idea was to make a sleeping character and some sort of text saying that if you played the card you could get an extra vacation day, which anyone could relate to.
The game has a unique art style, and i wanted to keep that as much as i could. So after searching throught the cards i found one that had a guy laying down, he was in a fight in the image, but that's what editing does right? So after some time in PS i changed it to a guy laying on his bed, made some simple blanket and pillow and it was done. Now i had to change the cards text, it was a bit tricky to find out which font the game used, but after i found it, it was easy.

Now that the digital card was done, i din;t just want to print it, so i thought i could print multiple ones and cut them so it would have layers and dept. I printed it on Couche 170g and started cutting the different parts, so the text block for example was lower than the image for example.
Since the cuts were kinda hard to make on that paper i also left one plain card.

The beggining is easy, you just use the ideas you already had thought about, but then it starts to get hard when you don;t know what else to explore, so in my case i started noticing details and create ideas with them, for example the pipes in the ceiling, or the little cracks on the ground.
I was actually surprised that i had good ideas, but now i'm also confused because i don't know which one to use. So i didnt know what to do exactly. Thankfully during Fernando Vilela's lecture i could relate one of my ideas with his work a little bit and it started to give me some perspective on what i could do in a short time that wouldnt be too simple.
Then i talked to Daniel and it was the last bit i needed to get my direction right.

My idea is to photograph EBAC and the red piped in the ceilings and mix them to make it look like the pipes are taking over, infiltrating. I thought i has a lot to do with cybernetics, especially in this digital era, even though im using water pipes, it kinda looks like something technological.

I used the morning to do some research, and with Michael's presentation about part 3, almost no time was left. So i decided to take the pictures i needed in the afternoon. I started by photographing the red pipes, and i found very interesting patterns, so that will help when compositing the images together. Then i took the pictures that will actually be the work. Since i planned the angles in my storyboard i didnt have to spend time thinking about it, and it all went smoothly.
Also talked with César and he said that its visually nice but i need to think more about the concept and the idea behind it.

Today we started developing ideas for the project. First spent the morning thinking about ideas individually. I did 3, mostly focused on equipment and food leftovers that should be avoided. And in the afternoon we joined our partners for this project, mine being Aline. That's actually a good combination since i know she is good at drawing, so i can manage the animating part.
We did storyboard for the 3 best ones, from all those that we had together. And now we need to put together a moodboard for monday.

Overall feedback was good, but i wanted to do more, and develop better my narrative, as i think it was a little bit shallow.
Maybe i can work on it in the research week.
The rest of the day was pretty much finishing the portfolio. I had a minor problem with one page, it had a little scratch. Other than that its all good.

I spent most of the day printing and making my physical portfolio. I managed to finish it by 9 pm, and then finally sleep. I wanted to print it in A2, but its 20 reais per page, and it would be 240 for my whole portfolio, so i decided to print A3, which ended up being 70 reais, plus 50 from the A2 sheets. Cutting and glueing it all is very boring but it gives a good feeling when you finish it.

I left Aline draw the storyboard because shes better at drawing, while i helped more with camera angles and composition, as well as some ideas that we had.
We managed to develop our characters but we will improve then with Leo's class tomorrow.
The moodboard was easy since we had a good idea of what we wanted to go for, and kind of a stablished style.

Aline did a moodboard yesterday, but with Leopoldo's advice today i decided to do another one, because it had too much illustrations, and not many real world references. So i webt back to the concepts of germs, construction, materials and chose images that would give this idea. With the main focus being the green germs.

There were a few images with too much red and orange, but that was stealing the attention of the green, so i reduced the sizes in order to fix that.

I spent the day doing backgrounds for the animation while Aline does the animatic. I eas going for a little bit more realistic style, but she told me that it should be more cartoonish, and i completely agree, we went for simple characters, simple shapes and flat colors. So it didnt make sense. I re-did that one and started to work on another angle that was needed. This one is a bit hard, but i think i can finish it by today.

We had a workshop with Alex about animating in after Effects, and for some reason its mandatory, so i kind of waste half of the day.
He teaches very well, and what he showed us is a very efficient way of animating, doesnt take long and if you're good you can make it seem smooth. But i'm decent with AE already, so i didnt learn nothing new from that. On the other side i used that time to experiment within the software with simulations, which i never used before and i was quite happy with the results. I also found a water simulation that i want to learn more about in order to use it for part 3.

Our animation has a light style i would say, and its easy to watch, a little bit funny even, so i think that a straight up aproach, showing our sketchbooks and ideas plus the result would be the best option.

Our time management was okay at first, but we both got sick, and that messed up a lot our plans, specially wednesday. Aline went to the hospital, and without her sending me the animation i couldnt edit it. I was also very sick, so i had some time to rest. Which was more than compensated by thursday, we stayed all day working at EBAC, until 9 pm. Then at home until 2 am.
We managed to do everything we wanted, but she ended up doing more than me, because we decided to do a frame by frame animation, and i dont draw, so i couldnt help.
Yesterday she told me how i could help, by reusing a few frames, and recoloring the characters, so i did that on top of the editing.

The "crit" went well, all groups did very good animations and i liked all of them. As well as the clients, they also liked them, and gave good feedback, to most of them. We didnt get any feedback regarding changes, so i think thats good, but at the same time i wish we had a little bit more to work on.
Everything is ready for assessment, so i have some free time now. I will probably research some more while i wait for the 5 om deadline.
