Ingrid- Germany was defeated due to ineffective command structure. Hitler was the main decision maker in Germany and often did not listen to the advice given by experienced generals, going against their advice instead. An example would be the change in strategy in the Battle of Britain. Another reason for Germany’s defeat was the inappropriate use of resources and military funds. Germany suffered from a lack of personnel, meaning that women often stayed at home instead of working in factories which led to a lack of manpower. Germany also suffered from the lack of appropriate weapons. Many new weapons were developed and used without sufficient testing, which was hazardous and imposed danger to users.Germany also had the shortage of essential equipment such as winter clothing and transport trucks due to the lack of attention to non military sectors. There were also too many types of armament meant that factories had to produce many different spare parts instead of focussing on a few proven weapons. This led to slow and ineffective armament production.

Germany lost ww2 due to their ineffective command structure, Hitler was the only one who was allowed to make any major decision. He acted on his own and did not listen to his experienced commanders. An example was the invasion of the Soviet Union, he had planned to take over by the end of winter. However the soviet resistance was a lot stronger than he expected, by winter he was unable to take over. Hitlers generals tried to persuade Hitler to withdraw as the soldiers were unprepared for winter warfair, however hitler did not listen and in the end the invasion of the Soviet Union was a failure.

Justin- the reason for German defeat was due to German miscalculation and an ineffective command structure. The Germans were separated into the OKH, the OKW, Kriegsmarine high command, and Luftwaffe High Command. This separation of high commands made it difficult for them to cooperate and Hitler and his inner circle were the main people with all the information. This animosity and miscommunication between the high commands resulted in lack of air support for many situations such as during Operation Barbarossa and the Battle of Kursk. The German also had a lack of natural petroleum which forced them to make bad decisions such as engaging Zhukov in Stalingrad and refusal to retreat as they needed to fight for control over the oil fields. The lack of petroleum also made the German war machine weaker and made the Germans have to abandon their planes and tanks and even had to switch designs due to lack of oil for the more petroleum intensive machines. This lack of petroleum really marred many decisions and made the Germans have to cancel a variety of their offensive operations to save petrol

Not destroying the United Kingdom armed forces on the beaches of France between 26 May and 4 June 1940/over stretching it’s armed forces and logistical tail. Many of the Allied soldiers who escaped at Dunkirk became the backbone of the British Army, who fought against the Nazi’s for the rest of the war and the Nazi’s could have taken the United Kingdom out of the war for good. I also have to say that this also shows one of the key deficiencies of Blitzkrieg, or Lightning war. I have read a number of historical papers on this and the most important element of the blitzkrieg concept was built around an organization designed, trained, and equipped for a short campaign in central and Western Europe. The eventual failure of the blitzkrieg system cannot be attributed to one particular commander or event. So when looking at the situation in late May 1940, the Germans had the opportunity to destroy what was left of the British Expeditionary force but did not, because it’s forward units had outrun their logistical tails and could not protect it’s own flanks from counter attack. Now when you compare how the Allies won the war from 1942 in the Western Desert, Pacific, Italy, North Western Europe this was because not only did they put the troops and material on the ground to win the battles, they also develop an immense logistial machine to supply the war fighting elements. Looking at Germany they did not do this and this of course was also a major weakness of the Japanese who effectively won battles by living of the land and this was not sustainable.

I could give many examples of how Hitlers interference with the decision making of his general staff, led to the downfall of the third reich, however a big mistake was, his decision(against his general staff’s better judgement) not to attack Moscow in force in December 1941, when he could have taken the capital of Soviet Russia and probably Stalin.

Hitler’s Germany lost the war because of their over reliance on Blitzkrieg to attack and take over countries. Blitzkrieg worked because Germany usually had the superior weapons and tactical advantage against those small countries but when Germany decided to attack the Soviet Union, they failed to take into the account of the Soviet Unions winter which had slowed down their operation, eventually depleting their food and resources, which caused the red army to push forward against Germany, eventually pushing them back into Berlin. Coupled with Germany executing the Final Solution, this had took up most of Hitler’s attention and resources

As Richard Evans writes, in Germany ‘by 1944, 75 percent of GDP was being devoted to the war in comparison to 60 percent in the Soviet Union and 55 percent in Britain’ [Richard Evans, The Third Reich at War, (England: Penguin Group, 2008), p333].

Justin- allied resistance played the most important part as Stalin managed to play a pivotal role along with the rest of allies. Stalin ordered order 227 which ordered the soldiers to not retreat and fight to the death. Stalin also managed to relocate his industry away from being captured by the Germans which allowed the Soviets to continue arms production. Allied resistance such as the Battle of Britain also destroyed a good portion of Germany’s military and the resistance movements such as the French resistance led by De Gauls and the Yugoslav resistance led by Tito also sabotaged German industry and killed off many of their soldiers and forced Germany to funnel more of their war efforts to rooting out resistance movements. This restrained the German war effort and managed to destroy a good portion of their military, along with the armies of the allied which defeated the Germans at Sicily and Kursk which forced the Germans
and Italians into full defence which was eventually cracked and they got defeated.

Although isolationism died at Pearl Harbor, its legacy of unpreparedness lived on. Anticipating war, Roosevelt and his advisers had been able to develop and execute some plans for military expansion, but public opinion prohibited large-scale appropriations for armament and defense. Thus, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, the United States had some 2,200,000 men under arms, but most were ill-trained and poorly equipped. Barely a handful of army divisions even approached a state of readiness. The Army Air Corps possessed only 1,100 combat planes, many of which were outdated. The navy was better prepared, but it was too small to fight a two-ocean war and had barely been able to provide enough ships for convoy duty in the North Atlantic. Eventually more than 15,000,000 men and women would serve in the armed forces, but not until 1943 would the United States be strong enough to undertake large-scale offensive operations.

French resistance also played a part in reducing German military capabilities by sabotaging and espionage

Patton, a General of the US army, juked the Germans into thinking that they were gonna stage an invasion on Calais, the closest beach from Britain, employing thousands of theatre people to make props and even made videos of him praising the army on the beaches of Dover, and purposely sending messages about the Calais landing, allowing German code breakers to intercept the message on purpose.

Xuan En— Germany’s defeat in war was because of Adolf Hitler’s failure in preventing war on two fronts. Two-front war occurs when opposing forces encounter on two geographically separate fronts. The opponent consequently encounters severe logistic difficulties as he is forced to divide and disperse his troops, defend an extended front line and is at least partly cut off from access to trade and exterior resources. Initially, Hitler wanted to avoid two-front war. However, he failed to beat Great Britain in the air battle and in 1941 attacked the Soviet Union. Great Britain remained unbeaten and managed to maintain the western front. He also failed to neutralize Great Britain. Coupled with other circumstances such as the lack of resources for a long war and failure to achieve a quick victory in the east. Germany ultimately got defeated in the World War 2.
