In the excerpt above he describes the measly allowance of food which was meant to last a slave an entire month. While they received only eight pounds of meat for a month a white man could have up to a pound in a single meal. Douglass is unable to state his own age because even that bit of information was a privilege they were not allowed to have. Giving them a birthday also forced slave owners to accept that slaves were humans too.
