In this narrative the author uses pathos to strengthen his argument by evoking strong emotions from the reader. In the short passage above Douglass describes his first experience witnessing the brutality of slave punishment. He was only a child when he watched his own aunt be bound and beaten by their master. His description of the scene is heart-wrenching and leaves the reader feeling sympathetic for the narrator. The horror that Douglass experienced in that moment really shows and makes people see how inhumane the treatment of slaves was

The author uses logos to strengthen his argument of the harsh conditions slaves were forced to live in. In the excerpt above he describes the measly allowance of food which was meant to last a slave an entire month. While they received only eight pounds of meat for a month a white man could have up to a pound in a single meal. The grim reality of how undernourished slaves were kept makes a strong impact on the reader and really makes them think about the cruelty of enslavement.

From the very first line of the book the narrator gives as much background information as he possibly can about himself given the constraints of having been a slave which is not much. Douglass is unable to state his own age because even that bit of information was a privilege they were not allowed to have. Giving them a birthday also forced slave owners to accept that slaves were humans too. He uses and describes his own experiences as a slave to further persuade the reader of how wrong and unjust slavery was.
