A crisis in general is mostly joined with situations that cause urgency, that if not attended may have negative consequences in people's life in many different ways (financial, family or personal). Meanwhile when a crisis is within the area of administration it is related to a situation arising inside an organization, company or government department. Besides creating complications with their personnel, the reputation of the whole company is on the line. The main difference is where the crisis is created and the implications that made it happen, like Tuz (1996) expressed that "crisis management requieres a systematic decision making." Meaning that the way to address and solve the problem at hand, is different when it is inside of a company.
Bibiana Garcia-Lourdes

Carmen María Jaime Casas

The difference between a general crisis and one within the area of administration relies in the fact that a general crisis can be about any given topic, this being a threat to an organization, a person, an event, etc. On the other hand, the crisis within an administration is seen as a specific field in which the results are mostly operacional, financial or socially within an organization. In fewer words, both types of crisis try to respond immediately in order to avoid the expansion of the crisis, but the administrative kind focuses even more on the effects within an organization and not just in general.

As seen on the presentation the definition of crisis can vary in different aspects. In general, a crisis is a big problem that came out of nowhere and that affects a lot of people at the same time. But a crisis in the area of administration is more about problems or mistakes that put the company at risk such as money issues, bad leadership, or reputation problems. In these situations, like the video showed, you have to think quick and you have to make smart moves to fix the problem and also have a good teamwork and good communication with everyone.

It is important to asses de situation, make decisions quickly and communicate them with your team. There may be an action plan previously created for a specific potential crisis.

A crisis within the area of administration a crisis specifically jeopardizes organizational processes, it threatens stability or it makes public relations scandals. Both of them involve urgency, but the general definition is focused on broad societal o personal impacts, and in administration the focus is a lot more on strategic responses and maintaining organizational stability.

It can come from inside a company, like a mistake or a bad decision. It can also come from outside, like a natural disaster or an economic hit. What makes a crisis different from regular problems is that it happens fast, chaotic, and needs quick action. In management, it’s something that needs to be handled with a plan, smart thinking, and strong leadership. You can’t always stop a crisis from happening, but you can be ready to deal with it.

I believe a crisis can be defined as a moment of serious difficulty, uncertainty, or danger, just like the Oxford Dictionary describes it. But beyond definitions, a crisis is a complex situation that often involves multiple variables and can impact different areas. In the context of administration, a crisis directly affects the company, putting its stability, finances, and reputation at risk. That’s why it’s essential not only to recognize when a crisis is happening but also to understand how to manage it effectively. In today’s world, crises are part of the reality we live in, and learning to navigate them is a key skill for any professional.

I find that the difference between the two definitions lies mainly in the scope and analytical focus. From a general perspective, a crisis is understood as a period of intense disruption and uncertainty that interrupts normal conditions and requieres urgent decision-making. This definition emphasizes the nature of the event itself and the instability it generates, without being limited to a specific field or system.

In contrast, within the are of administration, a crisis is defines in relation to its impact on organizational objectives and processes. Here, the focus shift toward management, highlighting leadership, strategic decision-making, and the organization's ability to respond effectively under pressure. Therefore, I find that while general definition of crisis concentrates on the occurrence and its consequences, the administrative definition places greater emphasis on control, response, and managerial responsibility.
