Purpose: The 17th Airborne Division did not partake in two large-scale operations (Operation Husky and Operation Neptune) because they were still training. They also had not taken part in Operation Overlord because by the time they had gotten to Britain, it was over. 17th Airborne actively fought in the Rhineland and Ardennes -Alsace.

Rhineland (Sept 15, 1944-March 21, 1945) Allies attempted to out flank the German line, a airborne operation was ordered including members of the 17th airborne. The operation failed but the allies would eventually break through the line. 

During the last offensive the Ardennes, nicknamed the battle of the Bulge, parts of the 17th Airborne were dropped in to push the Germans back.

Although the Medal of Honor was the only award they received, it is a very hard award to get and the highest one can receive. In each of these, the 17th airborne division pushed the enemy back. The Battle of the Bulge was a very difficult battle for them to participate in and win. This was the largest battle they partook in and they had no idea that the battle was even going to take place. The attack on the allies took them all by surprise. As if the surprise and brutal attack was not enough, the weather was not ideal either, it was very cold and rainy and that caused a lot of health issues. Miley. When the division was sent to Britain it would be commanded by the XVlll Airborne Corps which was part of the  First Allied Airborne Division.

The 17th Division missed the start of the war to finish up training, missing Operation Market Garden 

During the battle for the river Rhine, during this battle they would receive 3 more Metal of Honor.  

For a brief time they Division took over occupation duties before being sent home
