Joseph Benedict Marcellin Champagnat, who is also known as Marcellin Champagnat, was born at Marlhes France, during the French revolution in 1789. He grew up alongside nine other children and in his early years, he was bought up in a Christian household. Growing up in this environment was believed to be one of the main impacts of his Christian belief and values. Both Marcellin’s aunt and mother were religiously driven by their convent and gave him the realisation of faith and this then grew his devotion to Mary. Champagnat’s father received an average education and was very politically driven within the village and the church. His father’s role impacted Marcellin greatly as this then gave him the practical knowledge, leadership skills and driven nature to assist him in his future practices. Unfortunately, due to the French revolution, Marcellin was only able to start his education at age 11 and this did not last long due to the traumatic experience of his fellow peer being beaten and whipped.

At the age of 14, Marcellin came across a priest passing through his village. This visit then influences Marcellin to educate himself in a religious way and learn about the church and people. At the age of 16, Marcellin decided to re-enter formal education and join the minor seminary. This experience assisted in discovering Marcellin’s spiritual wellbeing and further develop this. Due to the lack of formal education, Marcellin struggled at this new schooling environment. This struggle of fair education privileges for Marcellin is believed to be the root of his passion for educating children. With the skills learnt from his mother, aunt and father, Marcellin was able to achieve his academic goals. A few years later, Marcellin was appointed a priest for the Archdiocese of Lyon. The traumatic experiences that Marcellin encountered through his educational journey, this then gave Marcellin the quote "To educate children you must love them and love them all equally." This quote has influenced the education system greatly over the past years.

On October 28, 1816, Marcellin was called to Jean-Baptiste Montagne’s death bed to hear his confessions. Jean-Baptiste Montagne told Marcellin about all the traumatic schooling journey. Marcellin came to the realisation that this 16-year-old, was just like him. This then drove Marcellin’s determination to make a change in the education environment of France.

Few months past and Marcellin founded, "The Marist Brothers of the Schools" (also known as “The Little Brothers of Mary”) This newly founded religious community lead to the education of children for many years to come and many other schools continued to follow Champagnats values and beliefs.

Priestly Roles
Marcellin's priestly roles are clearly reflected through his beliefs and actions in day to day life. The main ways that this role is reflected is through his use of prayer. Prayer has been a key value in Marcellin's life. Through the power of prayer, Marcellin was able to find the strength to continue and finish his studies. Prayer has also influenced Marcellin love for Mary

Prophetic Roles
Marcellin, participated in the prophetic work of Jesus Christ when he spoke out against injustice and acted upon the poor education system. As a child, Marcellin was traumatised by the beating of children and the lack of education for the less fortunate. This then resulted in him, in his later teen years, to educate himself in a religious way by joining the minor seminary. Through this, he then created a society that will educate young boys who are less fortunate or had traumatising educational experiences. These actions are reflected through the many schools that follow his traditions.

Kingly Roles
Through the power that Marcellin had due to his appointment of being priest, this then reflected through his kingly roles. Marcellin's power and influence were used to provide services for the less fortunate children that lack education. He used this power when creating Marist brothers.

Through the use of prayer, Marcellin has developed the religious skills to assist him in his educational mission. The prayer that Marcellin frequently referred to and used is:
Let us be filled with compassion for others, And help us to reach out to them in all their difficulties. to treat all those we meet with, 'love, and to love them all equally'.
This prayer relates to Marcellin as through this educational journey, he was treated unfairly and this gave him the 'Compassion for others'. This prayer inspired Marcellin to 'reach out to people in all their difficulties' This is shown through his actions in creating his own schools to educate children in their difficulties. Marcellin treats others with love and equally in all his practices by ensuring that the teachers he employed were fair and kind.

Marcellin was appointed as a priest and he says and attended multiple masses. Marcellin was known to say these masses regularly. This is significant to his mission as he preached his message of being inclusive and supporting the underprivileged of our society.

Throughout his studies at the minor seminary, there were many religious retreats that Marcellin was in attendance of. These retreats gave Marcellin an opportunity for reflection and opportunity for planning so he can achieve his mission.

The impact was to have extra resources to provide for the children. The extra brother provided additional resources to enable them to provide education to more disadvantaged children.

There are many schools and churches that follow in Marcellins tradition. Examples of these are Marist College Ashgrove. This school has followed in the Marist brother tradition by providing multiple resources and quality, fair education for young men. This school reflects and follows the priestly role set by Marcellin by creating a number of prayers dedicated to him and continuously holding masses and having a daily prayer. The school has followed the prophetic example set by Marcellin by providing religious subjects. These subjects spread the word of god and educated their young men to do the same. This school also reflects the kingly role through the reputation that they have upheld. This reputation has given them great power within the community.

Section 4 Par 37 - Rerum Novarum

The Rerum Novarum is an encyclical used by many reformers to show their actions. The particular part of the encyclical that relates to Marcellin Champagnat is section 4 part 37. This particular section of the encyclical is all about the protection of the poor. The main messages in this text that Marcellin could have been inspired by for his work is:

- It is crucial that the poor and badly off receive extra protection and consideration due to their lack of resources
- The poor have no resources of their own to fall back on and depend on, and must chiefly depend on the state. Where-as the wealthy class have many ways of shielding themselves, henceforth don’t need the help from the state.

In this encyclical especially, there was much talk of the Government that needed to take action. Marcellin's was a man of action and this would have driven him to provide education and resources to the children as others weren't trying.

This would have inspired Marcellin as it is about guiding people and letting them develop and grow. Marcellin's schools and society took in brothers which then assisted him with providing resources for the children to have a proper education. Through his leadership, he was a role model for the children and strong influence and this provided the children comfort.

To remedy these wrongs the socialists, working on the poor man's envy of the rich, are striving to do away with private property, and contend that individual possessions should become the common property of all, to be administered by the State or by municipal bodies. They hold that by thus transferring property from private individuals to the community, the present mischievous state of things will be set to rights, inasmuch as each citizen will then get his fair share of whatever there is to enjoy. But their contentions are so clearly powerless to end the controversy that were they carried into effect the working man himself would be among the first to suffer. They are, moreover, emphatically unjust, for they would rob the lawful possessor, distort the functions of the State, and create utter confusion in the community.

The Three Worlds of the Text

The World of the Text
Due to the fact that this parable was told by Jesus, it is assumed that this parable was written between the dates of 50 and 62 AD. This parable was clearly meant to spread a moral or message. It can be assumed due to the type of language being used, that this parable is meant for children. This is because of the simple metaphors and simple language. During this time that the parable was written, the Romans began persecutions of Christians. This means that this parable shed light and guidance for religious people at the time.

The World Infront of the Text
The moral of this parable is to guide and support people to the right path but then, letting them grow and nourish themselves. This simple moral can be related to today's society. There are many things that impact the youth today being drugs and alcohol and some charities, churches and organisations, followed by the message from the parable. They do this by providing extra support for those that are being led down the wrong path and eventually, turn out to be great children of God. For example, if a child was consuming drugs and a person noticed this. They then went to a helpline for their friend. This helpline would give them support and guidance through this time.

The World of the Text
From examining this parable, it is obvious that there is a key moral message throughout. The author did not clearly explain the message of this parable but from what we can gather from the constant metaphors, is that the seed are the children of God and the planter is God. In the beginning, the farmer plants the seeds and nourishes them but after, he lets the seeds grow themselves. From the quote
"But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches."
It is clear that this parable is about guiding the seeds to the right path but then, letting them grow and nourish themselves.
