In Peace Like a River the character, Mr. DeCuellar, was a lawyer and was in court. The author used Daniel Webster as an allusion to explain how Mr. DeCuellar acted in court.

Under his rule, the slabes crossed over to Southern Italy and returned home. In Peace Like a River, the main character wants a Spartacus model. The character explains how brave and heroic Spartacus was.

On pages 26, 105, 241 of Peace Like a River, there is an allusion to three of Zane Grey paperback books Wilderness Trek, Robber Roost, and Riders of the Purple Sage. On page 26 it metions how Swede has read all three of these Zane Grey books and has 'certainly learned the language'. On page 105, Swede confesses that O'Rourke writes much better westerns than Grey and comments on how Grey potrays women compared to O'Rourke. Lastly on page 241, Reuben compares his current real-life situation to one in 'Riders of the Purple Sage'.

Then on page 105 Swede says that O'Rourke's books are better because 'THe women don't talk alot and they ride like men'.
