Vladek is the main character of this story. He is an old man who can barley remember what he did the day before, but can easily recount what happened all those years ago in Auschwitz. He has lost the love of his life and his first born son. Now he is a lonely old man who is sometimes impossible to live with. Although, some might say he is a bother, he really just wants his son to be with him.

Mala is Vladeks second wife. They met long before the war, and after Anja died they got married. However, they are constantly fighting. She wants to use money to fix the little things, while Vladek wants to do it all himself, but since he is a sick old man it doesn't really work that way. Mala does eventually leave Vladek because she feels trapped by his sickness, that she can't leave him because of it. In the end she does come back though.

There isn't too much to say about young Richieu. He died at the age of three. His aunt was in charge of watching him during the war. When she believed the gestapo was coming for them she killed all of the children and herself because she thought it would be a better ending than what they would get.

Francoise is Art's wife. She was not raised as a Jew, but became one for Art. She didn't grow up around Holocaust survivors like all the other characters in the story, but she is very understanding of what happened and how they need to cope. She supports Art, but also makes him think why he does what he does. This helps Art to realize what he should be doing instead of what he wants to do sometimes.
