After introductory lessons to the 3 states of matter, students will use QR codes to do a States of Matter Scavenger Hunt. They will scan QR codes that have videos, songs, an Epic book, and information slides. Students will collaborate to learn additional information on their own without the teacher's direct instruction. They will answer questions about each code and record their answers on a graphic organizer. Students' goals will be to complete all the QR codes with accurate information. Partners will be high and low students to give the high students the opportunity to "teach" and the low students a role model to follow.

As the year winds down and our younger learners finish their testing, it can be very challenging to keep them on task and excited about learning. This is a great time to do an author study. Laura Numeroff is great because her books teach valuable ELA skills such as cause and effect; sequence of events; character, problem, solution; predicting text; and change of setting. Her books also feature animals that are fun to learn more about by checking out National Geographic For Kids and nonfiction paired text. There are lots of good ideas for snack and craft options on Pinterest to make the study even more fun.
For this assignment students will rotate through stations to perform a series of tasks involving QR codes. Task 1: Students will self-select the QR code for their choice of a book written by the author. After listening to the story, the student will complete a graphic organizer to sequence of the significant events of the story from beginning to end either by words or pictures. Task 2: The student will scan QR codes to learn fast facts about real animals like those featured. Task 3: The student will self- select a QR code to view a Learn to Draw tutorial of the animal of their choice and then write something they know, learned, or read about. Task 4: Students will scan the QR code to visit the author's website for fun and games featuring characters from the books.
