Even as a young boy John was industrious, he sold chickens, candy and he did jobs for his neighbors. He joined the business world when he found a job as a clerk at the age of 16. In 1863, Rockefeller entered in the Oil Industry when he invested, with partners, in a Cleveland refinery. In 1864, John marred Laura Celestia Spelma, they had four daughter and one son. In 1865 John bought out his partners and gain full control of the refinery.
