The theme of the poem is the continuity of human emotions throughout history. The line that best explains this is, "I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of my apron: Penelope did this too." which is almost foreshadowing of what the rest of the piece will be about, and that is, human's emotion through history

The tone of the poem is unusual because it changes a couple times throughout the poem. The beginning and end were sad, highlighted in the text: "I thought, as I wiped my eyes on the corner of the apron ... To the assembled throng that he was much too moved to speak," showing off the emotion of the moments. Then, towards the middle, it is more of a wistful tone, reading "This is an ancient gesture, authentic, antique, In the very best tradition, classic, Greek," reflecting the authors love for Greek Culture and the past.

In the poem, there is no direct metaphorical language. However, the suggested metaphor is that the housewife is like Penelope when the author states,"Penelope did this too." This is to link the speaker in the poem to Penelope and the Odyssey.

A different perspective is seen throughout the poem that is different from the Odyssey's. The perspective is that of an onlooker from the future, looking back on Penelope and taking a good, hard look at her emotions, instead of seeing her as just Odysseus's. Instead, the author focuses on how much Penelope was suffering instead of Odysseus and how his absence affected her.

An example of very powerful imagery is the phrase, "Your arms get tired, and the back of your neck gets tight." The quote shows how even if you try to hold on to something forever, you will eventually have to let go, as it gets too tiring holding on forever.
