One key event in this chapter is the interaction Holden has with Mrs. Marrow, the mother of a boy named Ernest who goes to his school, on the train. During this conversation Holden lies to Mrs. Marrow about who he is, her son and his reputation, where he's going, and why he left so early. This conversation changes Holden's mood because it leaves him feeling guilty after lying to such a kind woman. This dishonesty shows Holden's inability to form genuine connections only furthering his feelings of isolation. " Then I just started reading this timetable I had in my pocket. Just to stop lying. Once I get started, I can go on for hours if I feel like it. No kidding. Hours."

At the beginning of the chapter, Holden is in a taxi getting a ride to the hotel he is staying that night. In said taxi, he strikes up a conversation with the driver, Horowitz, about the ducks at the lagoon and where they go when the lake freezes over. This is a key event because it symbolizes Holden's insecurity about his future. This shows themes and Holden's feelings of loneliness and depression. "He didn't say anything else, so I didn't either."

In this chapter Holden finds himself at the bar beneath the hotel he is staying in. In the bar he invites a girl, Bernice Krebs, to dance even though he doesn't really find her attractive. During this interaction, he is turned down resulting in him getting frustrated revealing his true hypocrisy. After being turned down Holden begins to feel lonely showing the reader how desperate he is for human connection after leaving school. However later in the night when they all are leaving none of the girls agreed to pick up the check, and even though he was gonna pay either way it frustrated him that they didn't even fake it. "I've bought the whole three of them a hundred drinks if only they hadn't told me that."

After reading chapters 8-10 in "The Catcher in the Rye" these are the three events I thought were the most important in each chapter. All three represent the development of Holden and the common feeling he has throughout the book.

I think that in the following chapter, we will see more of his journey before returning home. I think he will meet new people, catch up with old friends, and hopefully change and grow with new experiences. I also think that he might find a lady who actually loves him, who will show him that he can be loved and change his negativity towards the world.
