1. What are professional and/or non-professional roles and responsibilities in your chosen field?

The professional role of an SLP is to assess, diagnose and treat individuals suffering from speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Speech and language are an important part of everyday life. If a person has difficulty communicating, they won’t be able to perform to the best of their abilities as learning and interacting with other people requires proper communication may it be verbal or nonverbal what’s important is that the speaker is able to convey their thoughts properly. Children who suffer from speech and language disabilities tend to fall behind their peers’ causing feelings of frustration and isolation. Thus, the main role of speech-language pathologists is to be able to provide therapy in order for the child to keep up and continue to learn with their peers and grow up to be a functioning member of society. On the other hand, for geriatric patients, the main goal for therapy is for them to relearn the skills that they have lost. Thus, their main goal for speech and language therapy is for them to be able to communicate or do everyday tasks like how they used to. The nonprofessional role of an SLP is to provide support and encourage their patients. This is vital in order to maintain the patients’ motivation to continue with therapy and improve the prognosis of the disorder. This will not only make therapy easier for the clinician but would also greatly help the patient as a positive attitude will improve their overall motivation in life.

2. What is the value of role clarity among members of the team?

Clarity is an essential aspect among team members as it allows for engagement that improves trust and transparency. Communication happens when there is a sender and a receiver where both play an important role when information is being shared. The sender must be clear and concise with their thoughts and the receiver must be able to ask questions whenever something is unclear. Thus, clarity is important so that both sender and the receiver fully understand what the other person is saying to avoid a breakdown in communication. The clarity in roles is important so that the weaknesses of one person can be supported by the strengths of another. This is important in the healthcare profession as not everyone is taught the same thing—that’s why there are specializations so that not one person is burdened by everything. Therefore, it is essential that the roles are clarified so that each person has a clear understanding of their responsibilities and be able to perform to the best of their abilities. Not only will this improve communication but it will also improve productivity as every person is aware of what they’re supposed to do and not be burdened by things they do not know.

Firstly, by having role clarity, each member has a clear understanding of what is expected of them as well as what is expected of their colleagues—this allows little to no room for errors, role confusion, and reduced health outcomes. Secondly, having clarity also entails good communication which is critical when the team discusses a certain case on what the best intervention should be—this promotes efficiency because there are different minds working together at the same time it facilitates learning for all. Ultimately, clarity is beneficial to both parties wherein the interdisciplinary team can learn from each other and at the same time it promotes safe and quality care for their clients.

A lack of clarity among the roles of a team’s members may cause stress, confusion, and possible repetition of tasks and resource wastage, hindering the team’s effectiveness. Role clarity allows members to have a clear understanding of their tasks, responsibilities and processes when providing care for a client. Lastly, this sets boundaries to what an individual healthcare professional must address and what he/she must not address to avoid disorganization. Therefore, role clarity is a team’s strategy to have an effective team performance which could also build trust among other members.
