Why are student/teacher relationships important in administration? The foundation of education is built on relationships, none more important than that of the student/teacher. A positive, healthy classroom relationship can be a driving factor in student success and achievement. In the same regards, a negative student/teacher relationship can have the adverse affect on student success and achievement. As educators, we have to be diligent in nurturing our student while maintaining an appropriate relationship.

What are three best practices related to student/teacher relationships? The three best practices that educators can enforce to obtain a healthy student/teacher relationship is to: 1) maintain a professional, positive relationship 2) Use only approved contact methods for correspondence and 3) follow all protocols set forth by your district and code of ethics, as it pertains to student/teacher relationships.

What is an emerging issue related to your topic that educators should watch to see how it plays out and impacts your work? Technology is one of the most prevalent issues in regards to student/teacher relationships. It has become second nature to share contact information such as cell phone numbers, social media handles, and even e-mails. All of this technology makes handling student/teacher relationships tricky. We have to be cognizant of boundaries that should exist between student and educator and guard ourselves against potential inappropriate situations. I ask my staff to make all of their social media accounts private and encourage them not to accept friend requests from our students. I stress to them that there is a tremendous liability in engaging in contact through these types of platforms. Our district provides a school e-mail and messaging system that I encourage all staff and students to use for correspondence to ensure the safety of all parties involved.

I interviewed the superintendent, Mr. Wolfenbarger, from Comstock ISD in regards to student/teacher relationships and their implications on student success.

As an educator and aspiring administrator, it is important to me to understand the significance of student/teacher relationships. There has been an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates that a positive, working relationship between students and teachers can be a catalyst for student success and progress. These relationships are pertinent to a positive school culture but must be handled professionally. There are boundaries that teachers and students must abide by to ensure that relationships remain appropriate. I chose this topic to inform educators of the influence, that we as teachers and administrators, have over our students and to show the implications of both positive and negative relationships.
