Islam: Islamic law has tough consequences for the criminal in the hope that they will deter criminals.

Christianity: Christianity agrees with deterrence but not through such harsh punishment. For example many Christians are against the death penalty.

Judaism: Judaism has the death penalty as a deterrent.

Hinduism: Hinduism has the death penalty as a deterrent.

Buddhism: Buddhism does not agree with harsh punishments that could harm the criminal. Islam: Under Shari'ah Law, harsh punishments like lashings and removal of limbs can reform the individual because the person sees the wrong they have done.

Christianity: Christians believe that many can be reformed through working with criminals, counselling, education programmes, and so on. 

Buddhism: Buddhists hold the same views as Christianity in this case.

Hinduism: Hinduism supports reformation to allow people to learn fromt heir mistakes. reformation as an aim has been central to all prison reform in Britain since the early 19th century.

The punishment should fit the crime even to the point where it can be seen as revenge. Islam, Judaism and Hinduism support a 'life for a life' for murderers where appropriate. Many Christians believe that a criminal should serve their time, but that the death penalty makes the law as bad as the criminal.
