To what extent is our perspective determined by our membership of a particular culture? (Language B guide, 2019)

We studied and discussed several film stills from "Baraka" using the "Lenses" visible thinking routine while tacking the theme of Identities and exploring its many facets. We then reflected on how our lenses, inextricably tied to our cultural context, influence our understanding of other cultures and identities.

I've used this text in TOK classes before and students have absolutely loved it. It had started some of the most thought-provoking and reflective discussions and criticisms from them.

It's found its way into my English B class last year after a debate my classes had about language death vis-a-vis language learning. Do we need to sacrifice one language for another? Why are we ashamed of the language our grandparents speak?

In discussing our thoughts on this text, we responded to the following TOK questions from the Language B guide:

If people speak more than one language, is what they know different in each language?

What would be lost if the whole world shared one common language?

In tackling the theme of Experiences, particularly migration and displacement, students wrote Letters of Love, personal letters, to Syrian, Iraqi, Yazidi, Palestinian and Rohingya refugee children. The foundation has very specific guidelines regarding the content and tone of the letter, which really helped the students understand the impact of every linguistic decision they make.

It was a very difficult task for the students and while we spent time researching, reading, watching, and discussing, we had to contend with deep-seated and at times invisible notions of privilege.
