David Lammy, the British Labour MP, has been a leading voice in highlighting racial bias within the criminal justice system in the UK. In his significant Lammy Review, Lammy examined the treatment and outcomes of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals across all stages of the justice system. He found substantial evidence of racial disparities, particularly noting the overrepresentation of these groups at key points, such as arrests, sentencing, and imprisonment.

Folasade Medina

The effects of these systemic biases are severe. African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be incarcerated for drug offenses, even though studies show both groups use drugs at similar rates as white Americans. Furthermore, a conviction and incarceration can lead to disenfranchisement, with African Americans being disproportionately affected. In 34 states, individuals on parole or probation are denied the right to vote, and in 12 states, a felony conviction results in permanent loss of voting rights. This racial bias within the system perpetuates a cycle of inequality, adversely affecting the economic stability, social mobility, and mental health of these communities.

Folasade Medina

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy highlighted the systemic racial inequities within the U.S. justice system, emphasizing that injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere. He believed that collective action could bring lasting change. Despite persistent challenges, such as overrepresentation of people of color in arrests and incarceration, his vision inspires ongoing efforts for criminal justice reform. Following events like George Floyd’s death, there’s renewed energy to dismantle racial disparities.

Folasade Medina

Throughout North American history, racial biases have perpetuated differences and injustices. However, as we develop as a society we notice a change towards inclusivity and acceptance. Court hearings such as Pearson v. Murray, Sweat v. Painter, and Brown v. Board of Education, produced an outcome in which conflict resolution is becoming more progressive. However, inequality is evident through the process of these cases. For example, in Brown v. Board of Education, the courts below the supreme court denied Brown the win.

Jeron Kim

Researchers utilized eye-tracking technology to assess how often teachers looked toward students they thought would have problematic behaviors. The teachers were then informed of the socioeconomic situation of the child and the teachers were more empathetic towards the child. However, this only applied to teachers being the same race as the child.

Jeron Kim
