Montag's memory of trying to fill a sieve with sand is significant because it represents how he was trying to do an impossible and hopeless task. The sieve is impossible to fill with sand because it falls right through. A sieve is a utensil used to separate solids from liquids or bigger objects from littler objects. I think this relates to the plot because Montag finds himself in impossible situations throughout part 2. He realizes it's hopeless to try to memorize books and at times he feels like there is nothing he can do to change the society around him.

Montag's memory of the sieve and sand was when he was little and he was sitting on a yellow dune by the sea in the middle of the blue and hot summer day trying to fill a sieve to get a dime because he cruel cousin said he would give him one. His hands were tired, the sand was hot and he felt tears move down his face. A sieve is a device used for separating wanted elements from unwanted material. The sieve represents Montag desire to pour books and knowledge into his brain.

As a child, Montag tried to fill a sieve with sand. his cousin had offered a dime if he could fill the sieve. A sieve is a tool used to sift through powders in order to smooth them out. I believe this related to the plot as Montag is trying to make a difference in a society that wants to stay the same. He is pouring ideas into the brains of the people that surround him but they refuse to listen. This society cannot hold this knowledge.

A sieve is a kind of utensil the consists of wire and mesh that can sift fine material. As a kid, Montag was given an impossible task to fill a sieve with sand by his cousin. This relates to the plot because, in part 2, Montag is given a lot of hard to impossible tasks and situations that he doesn't know how to deal with. The sieve and the Sand is significant because even though fill a sieve with sand isn't possible, Montag didn't stop trying to figure out how to complete that task.

The chapter title, "The Sieve and the Sand" refers to a memory from Montag's childhood he has when he's on the train reading the Bible. He remembers being a child on the beach trying to fill a sieve with sand which is an impossible thing to do. He's reminded of this episode as he's trying to memorize what he's reading in the Bible and how he is trying to fix a broken society, which also seems impossible.

During summer, as a child, Montag’s cousin dared him to fill a sieve with sand. He couldn’t do it. A sieve is a strainer. You use it to get all of the pulp out of your lemonade. It might relate to the plot in the sense that Montag tries so hard to spread the word of books but fails just like that day on the beach.
