Recovering from trauma is a mentally difficult process followed by physical pain. Trauma begins with disturbing/unpleasant events leading to emotional and physical distress. Trauma may be more commonly caused by natural disasters, tragic deaths, any form of abuse, and much more. Traumatic events take a big toll on the body destroying the body and the mind's tranquility causing the individual not to live a normal life. Trauma goes beyond fear, trauma harms a person's sense of safety for a long period. Side effects include flashbacks, nightmares, headaches, fatigue, racing heart, sweating, chronic pain, sleeping problems, and more. Recovery is a long difficult process. The more unpleasant the event was, the longer it may take to recover. Your lifestyle choices play a crucial role in your recovery process. It is recommended to maintain a good sleep schedule and a healthy diet, pick up a hobby, spend time with supportive and caring people, meditate, etc. During recovery, your body cannot afford the side effects of unhealthy choices such as drinking, doing drugs, losing sleep, eating unhealthy, etc. Speaking to your DR is also a good idea to go over a treatment plan as well as all the options of care there are for you. It is very important to take care of yourself and always reach out for help to live a better quality of life.

There are many others going through the same journey that are continuously finding a reason to keep moving forward. Support from family and close friends, even people that can relate to us helps us find meaning in life and gives us hope to continue on. Working on our faith and relying on God to give us strength to carry on can help most of us that believe in a higher power. A lot of options. A lot of resources. A lot of ways to keep our mind at bay and strong. It may take a while for a lot of us, but there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.

As people age, the trauma from COVID-19 is exacerbated due to increased mortality rates and underlying health conditions. A weakened immune system makes it harder for seniors to combat the virus, raising the risk of complications like pneumonia, blood clots, and sepsis. These factors contribute to heightened anxiety, fear, frustration, and feelings of helplessness among older adults. To mitigate this trauma, maintaining routines, engaging in outdoor activities, and offering programs for support are essential in caring for the mental health of seniors during the pandemic.

-Reference-

Norman, A.

This website shares early data on how older adults handled mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing challenges, they showed resilience to anxiety, depression, and stress, which may be due to their life experience, social connections, and positive daily routines. However, while this resilience may have helped, the emotional strain caused by isolation and fear still contributed to trauma. With more attention and support, the trauma experienced by older adults can be mitigated, improving their mental well-being during such crises.

-Reference-

Ipsit V. Vahia, M.

This book discusses the negative psychological and biological impacts of COVID-19 on elderly individuals. It examines how cytokine storms caused by the virus can worsen mental health issues in older adults, contributing to trauma by exacerbating conditions such as anxiety and depression. The book also suggests interventions to reduce the effects of this trauma, highlighting the importance of addressing both the physical and mental health of seniors during the pandemic.

-Reference-

Grolli, R.
