Erik Erikson created the theory of development, which hones in on children's development as well. The theory of development consists of 8 stages:

1. Trust vs. Mistrust (From birth to 1&1/2 years)
2. Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt (From 1&1/2 years to 3 years)
3. Initiative vs. Guilt (3-5 years old).
4. Industry vs. Inferiority (6-11 years old).
5. Identity vs. Confusion (12-18 years old).
6. Intimacy vs. Isolation ( 18-40 years old).
7. Generativity vs. Stagnation (40-65 years old).
8. Integrity vs. Despair (65-end of life).

Overall, the theory that was created by Erik Erikson is stating that children's brains and skills grow over time, and they don't stop there. Erikson instead doubles down and suggests that humans continue to develop even through adulthood. Erikson explains that within the first 2 stages, the child is learning who to trust and how to biologically help themselves (learn how to crawl, eat, etc..). The next 2 stages are where the child understands emotions such as guilt and honesty, and also is wanting to actively engage in the world around them, and making decisions for themselves. In stages 5 & 6, the human is at the area of development in which they are trying to find their identity and create outside relationships, whether that be friendships or partnerships. The final two stages are those of adulthood, where humans decide to start a family or live alone, and participate in the environment/work world around them. This is also where humans accept future generations and that they will one day age no more and reflect. It is important as an educator to understand how these children grow and develop, because we will be influences on these children's lives for years to come. If a teacher can understand a child's brain, they can influence that child's development in the classroom to make for positive outcomes (grades, attendance, bullying, etc..). These changes are not only physical for the students, but mental and emotional as well, and educators have to be prepared to guide these students in a way that is deemed fit. If we as educators guide these students to more positive developments as they grow, it is more likely that they will live a happier and more successful childhood and adulthood.
