The causes of the Holocaust are complicated because there were many contributing factors. Germany lost world war one, and the country and the people were heavily punished for their involvement in the war . Because of these harsh penalties, the Germans were bitter and held a grudge against the rest of the world. This also motivated them to get revenge and to seek military victories against neighboring countries in the late 1930's. Also during the 1930's Germany was suffering great economic depression, even worse than the rest of the world. The Jewish people became Germany's scapegoat because Jewish merchants and others were highly successful during these difficult times.

Many Holocaust refugees tried to escape to Denmark, America, England, Jerusalem a city in Islam, and many other safe countries that would give them asylum. Many of them got to freedom only by the help of non-Jewish people willing to risk their own lives. Some refugees did not make to safety and were placed in concentration camps.

Their lives when they got to safety depended on where they went. Some people had to go into hiding and pretend they weren't Jewish. Some children could still attend school if they became Catholic and hid their identities. They sometimes could only live in one bedroom, tiny apartments. People had to leave their family in Germany to get safe and the must have been lonely.

The future for the refugees also varied on where they went. Some people could just go on living their lives again with their whole family, or maybe they had to leave part of their family behind and be lonely. Some of the people had to hide that they were Jewish and had to go to Catholic church. Most were lonely because they had to leave their families back in Germany. Most people could be safe and find asylum in surrounding countries, others were not as lucky and were caught and brought back to Germany for their death. Everything as a refugee was also temporary, and many did not know where they would be moved or who they would have to deal with.

Margaret grew up in Kaunus, the current capitol of Lithuania. When the German army invaded Lithuania, many Jewish families fled. Margarets's family wanted to wait because her brother was away at Holiday camp and they didn't want to leave him behind. Her family was brought to the ghetto where she found her husband and they escaped the ghetto. They would end up being free.
