I enjoyed reading, but didn't take it too seriously. Then, somehow, when I read The Great Gatsby, something clicked inside of me. I was so captivated, so entrenched in the symbolism. It hit me in such an incredibly transformative way. It's a little basic, but here's what I like about Hemingway in terms of  teaching disciplinary literacy: his work is incredibly easy to read, yet still maintains a density in terms of themes and ideas.

More than anything, I think a lot of students exiting high school lack critical thinking skills. My goal as an educator will be to make sure students have these tools, to the best of my ability. The easiest way to get

The similarities and differences between literature and other art mediums is important to me.

An example I often used in creative writing classes: the film ARRIVAL is based on a short story called "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. Watching the film and reading the story, I like to talk about the differences between the two, and what we make of those differences.

The ability to make connections across disciplines is important to me!
