According to Loretta Frances Ichord in “Tooth Worms and Spider Juice: An Illustrated History of Dentistry,” people of ancient times considered the pain of a toothache was caused by a tooth worm that had appeared spontaneously or bored its way into the tooth.
If the pain was severe, it meant the tooth worm was thrashing about. And if the aching stopped, it only meant the worm was resting.

Honey
Honey, a product of bees, was used to coat an infected tooth in the Middle Ages.

Dentistry in the United States used to be practiced by the same people that would give you a haircut. They were referred to as barber-surgeons, and they often caused more harm than they did good. They were known for their crude practices as well as handing out bizarre advice to their patients.

The end of the 1950s saw a revolution in dentistry as the introduction of high- speed air-driven drills coupled with improvements in local anaesthesia made it far easier to fill decayed teeth. This was just as well, as in the mid-1950s sugar rationing ended.

A regular salt water rinse and cold compress application can typically remedy minor irritation, but more serious toothaches may require a dentist's intervention.
