Religion is a big umbrella. Certainly the God of the Old Testament was a tough guy, and there's a big price for sin in the New Testament, and even Buddhism has karma keeping you in check, but on a certain level - there's truth in all that. If you misbehave and cause others pain, you're going to be in a "hellish" state of mind. On the other hand if you're highly compassionate and intelligently forgiving life will probably be better. It's hard to relax without some type of moral spine. Every organization - religious institutions are no exception - has their fair share of charlatans who preach holiness (for the money) and instill guilt, but that doesn't negate the value in some of the basic teachings. And religion goes beyond humbling one's self to omnipotent forces or celebrating rituals. Some people are devoted to their wealth, their appearance, their accomplishments. Some spend a life time praying to the guy in the mirror. Some are more concerned with their cell phones than salvation, enlightenment, or the after life. That said, I can't decide whether to replace my failing I-phone 11 with the 15 or wait for the 16 in October.

Rarely use the word "shame." Strikes me as antiquated and insincere, "That's a shame, he could have been great," or too judgmental and heavy. "He shamed his organization with his incompetence." You have to do a lot to "shame" yourself." I remember my grandmother using it, but haven't heard it much in the last 40 years.

I think Brown was over the top on this one. I occasionally "regret" something I've done in the past, but never beat myself up with "shame."
