The teachers at KGE have always done an amazing job making sure that every moment counts (both during in person classes as well as this past year online.) These additional 20 days are not necessary for ALL students and should only be provided to the students that need it. KGE has been an A school for as long as my child has been attending school there. Students have been performing extremely well and it is obvious that the teachers are able to cover the curriculum in the 180 days and the students have been able to learn it and demonstrate their learning. Students need time to rest and pursue other interest during the summer, they need time with their families, time to dedicate to sports or other interests. The renewed energy they have as they go back for a new year is evident at the end of the summer. Exhausted and burned out children will not perform better. Teachers spend extra time helping ALL students who are not making progress. Teachers also need the parents to be involved. One can not educate a child alone, this is a team effort.  Students are being passed on to the next grade level regardless of their ability.

This is when I first was aware of Los Lunas School District plan to extend the calendar. https://padlet.com/edtech88/s84272dpd1sckvv1/wish/1435698464 I am writing this letter in regards to Superintendent Arsenio Romero’s proposed “Opportunity Calendar”.  There are a number of concerns that I have regarding this proposed calendar and the affects it will have on many Los Lunas Schools Families.  There are many students/parents who have assured they have completed all work and kept up with all requirements to stay at their correct education level during the pandemic.  What will these students do while other students are catching up?  Will they be able to progress, or be stagnant and become bored and uninterested?  These students who have worked hard during the shutdown should not be penalized.  It is unfair to them.  The schools are equipped with a plethora of testing, including Istation, Common Formative Assessment (CFA), Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA), and Standard Based Report Card (SBRC).  Why haven’t you considered placing students into classes based on their education testing level and keep students in the current calendar?
 
This past year dealing with Covid 19 has been difficult for everyone, including children.  They haven’t been able to compete in sports, take family vacations, go to the movies, socialize with their peers.  Have you considered that children have already lost one summer due to shutdown/quarantine?  It wouldn’t behoove children to have them lose another summer to be in the classroom.  Especially for those children whom they, their teachers, and their families have worked so hard to keep them at their correct education level.  Junior and High School students will particularly have a hard time losing their summer.  Also, many high school students have summer jobs. These jobs prepare them for their future. This idea of adding weeks of school to students will lead to student burnout.  Not to mention Teacher burnout.  In this day and age teachers have an extraordinarily difficult job.  Have you considered how adding time to their schedule, without their choice, will affect them and their choice to continue teaching?  
 
There were seven (7) days added to the Los Lunas School (LLS) district calendar for 2019/2020.  This was done without a vote from the parents.  Yet, after the days were added (taking family time away), LLS cut the school day by 17 minutes a day.  This basically made it illogical to add days to the school calendar.  Are you considering families and students who have done everything possible to keep up with requirements?  In regards to cutting costs for working family’s childcare; that is not what public education is meant to do.  Public education is there to provide every child with an education.
 
Do you know how many students are not at their correct educational level? What steps did the Los Lunas School District do to ensure Los Lunas District students were keeping up with their work during the shutdown?  What is the percentage of students that are currently behind? At what levels are they behind? What is the percentage of students who are on target or above? Finally, what type of logic are you using to believe that adding 20 days to the school calendar will be beneficial to the Los Lunas School District?  Additional breaks and/or longer breaks during a year-round school calendar will make it harder for students/teachers to acclimate back to the classroom.  Getting the students settled after, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break is difficult. Therefore, Superintendent Arsenio Romero’s proposal for year-round school with additional breaks seems implausible.
 
In conclusion, how much feedback have you received from Los Lunas District students, parents, teachers, staff before considering this year-round calendar?  How did the Superintendent’s office share this proposed calendar with Los Lunas District parents?  I only learned about the proposal this morning when my husband happened across an article in the News Bulletin. I have since communicated with six parents who were also unaware of the proposal.  The Los Lunas School District is equipped with access to email and mailing addresses for parents.  The News Bulletin article mentions there is a townhall tonight.  Since parents haven’t been made aware, the Schoolboard will not get honest thorough feedback.  This is information that should be shared beforehand.  Did you consider parenting plans in which children are with one parent for the 9-month school year and with the other parent (possibly in another town or state) for the 3-month summer.
 
I am requesting that you are well aware of the decisions you are making and the impact those decisions will have on the people you are serving.  All people...not just one group.

But now is not the time...we are burned out and have been burned out for months.  We have been making ourselves stressed and sick this entire school year trying to make remote learning work.  There has been good progress in some and poor growth in others.  I do not discount this and the need for a massive intervention. But teachers are tired and in survival mode.  We need our summer to catch up with our families both near and far.  We need time to recreate and breathe.  Shortening the summer break will result in poor morale and high absences in staff.  Adjusting to a year round schedule can be achieved by starting 2021/2022 SY in August, going until June in 2022 and starting the 2022/2023 SY in July 2022.  Please don’t jump start a year long schedule so soon, staff and teachers need recovery from these past 14 months.  Last summer myself and everyone I know didn’t travel or even go to the zoo. We couldn’t visit family or loved ones due to COVID. I would love to spend time with my family this summer. It’s my salvation right now.

My students this year have made amazing progress while we were online and in the classroom. The pandemic did not slow down their learning. I believe that making kids remain in school longer over their Summer break is not the way to help them. As a teacher, I do not see strong data to support longer school years helping kids. In fact, I have seen data that suggests it can have negative effects on the students or no improvement at all. Longer school years will cause students and teachers to experience burn-out.  Students deserve to be with their families during the Summer. The connections that children can make over the Summer with their families last a lifetime. I know we both understand the importance of family; and schools should not take students away from their Summer traditions. And what about the students that do not have that family structure or opportunity? There can be Summer camps at the schools to support these students, taught by school staff that are able to work the Summer. Maybe these programs can get students outdoors. Many students in the community help their families in agriculture or family businesses during the Summer which gives these children structure to build skills upon.

There are other ways to improve the academic success of children. ]]> 2021-04-20 01:25:58 UTC https://padlet.com/edtech88/s84272dpd1sckvv1/wish/1435808772 https://padlet.com/edtech88/s84272dpd1sckvv1/wish/1435809732 I am writing this letter in regards to Superintendent Arsenio Romero’s proposed “Opportunity Calendar”.  There are a number of concerns that I have regarding this proposed calendar and the affects it will have on many Los Lunas Schools Families.  There are many students/parents who have assured they have completed all work and kept up with all requirements to stay at their correct education level during the pandemic.  What will these students do while other students are catching up?  Will they be able to progress, or be stagnant and become bored and uninterested?  These students who have worked hard during the shutdown should not be penalized.  It is unfair to them.  The schools are equipped with a plethora of testing, including Istation, Common Formative Assessment (CFA), Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA), and Standard Based Report Card (SBRC).  Why haven’t you considered placing students into classes based on their education testing level and keep students in the current calendar?
 
This past year dealing with Covid 19 has been difficult for everyone, including children.  They haven’t been able to compete in sports, take family vacations, go to the movies, socialize with their peers.  Have you considered that children have already lost one summer due to shutdown/quarantine?  It wouldn’t behoove children to have them lose another summer to be in the classroom.  Especially for those children whom they, their teachers, and their families have worked so hard to keep them at their correct education level.  Junior and High School students will particularly have a hard time losing their summer.  Also, many high school students have summer jobs. These jobs prepare them for their future. This idea of adding weeks of school to students will lead to student burnout.  Not to mention Teacher burnout.  In this day and age teachers have an extraordinarily difficult job.  Have you considered how adding time to their schedule, without their choice, will affect them and their choice to continue teaching?  
 
There were seven (7) days added to the Los Lunas School (LLS) district calendar for 2019/2020.  This was done without a vote from the parents.  Yet, after the days were added (taking family time away), LLS cut the school day by 17 minutes a day.  This basically made it illogical to add days to the school calendar.  Are you considering families and students who have done everything possible to keep up with requirements?  In regards to cutting costs for working family’s childcare; that is not what public education is meant to do.  Public education is there to provide every child with an education.
 
Do you know how many students are not at their correct educational level? What steps did the Los Lunas School District do to ensure Los Lunas District students were keeping up with their work during the shutdown?  What is the percentage of students that are currently behind? At what levels are they behind? What is the percentage of students who are on target or above? Finally, what type of logic are you using to believe that adding 20 days to the school calendar will be beneficial to the Los Lunas School District?  Additional breaks and/or longer breaks during a year-round school calendar will make it harder for students/teachers to acclimate back to the classroom.  Getting the students settled after, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break is difficult. Therefore, Superintendent Arsenio Romero’s proposal for year-round school with additional breaks seems implausible.
 
In conclusion, how much feedback have you received from Los Lunas District students, parents, teachers, staff before considering this year-round calendar?  How did the Superintendent’s office share this proposed calendar with Los Lunas District parents?  I only learned about the proposal this morning when my husband happened across an article in the News Bulletin. I have since communicated with six parents who were also unaware of the proposal.  The Los Lunas School District is equipped with access to email and mailing addresses for parents.  The News Bulletin article mentions there is a townhall tonight.  Since parents haven’t been made aware, the Schoolboard will not get honest thorough feedback.  This is information that should be shared beforehand.  Did you consider parenting plans in which children are with one parent for the 9-month school year and with the other parent (possibly in another town or state) for the 3-month summer.

Second, where is the data that shows that adding 25 days will make a difference? There are claims that students had a learning loss since the pandemic began... how are 25 extra days going to compensate for a year’s worth of loss? My children have been attending classes online and participating, and their teachers have done a pronominal job of teaching them.
