The Munich massacre forever mourned the history of the Olympic Games, after militants from the terrorist group Black September, linked to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), murdered two Israeli athletes in the Olympic village, took hostages nine more and demanded the release of 234 Palestinians from Israeli prisons. When the police tried to free the Israelis at the Fürstenfeldbruck military airport, where they had been transferred in two helicopters, five of the eight terrorists, a German police officer and all the hostages were killed.

On May 14, 1981, Pope John Paul II was greeting more than 10,000 followers in St. Peter's Square when a burst of gunshots was suddenly heard. The target: the Pontiff. At just 23 years old, Mehmet Ali Agca had already threatened the Pope in 1979, when he wrote a letter saying that, in the name of Islam, he would kill John Paul during one of his trips. John Paul II was saved and forgave the aggressor.

The terrorist attacks of 9/11 
On September 11, 2001, a group of suicide bombers from the Al Qaeda network carried out four simultaneous attacks with hijacked planes. The terrorists crashed two planes (American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175) into the Twin Towers in New York, completely destroying the World Trade Center complex. After the third plane (American Airlines Flight 77) crashed, the impact caused serious damage to the Pentagon. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93), which was aimed at the White House or the Capitol in Washington, was diverted thanks to the passengers confronting the terrorists until the aircraft crashed in an empty field in Pennsylvania. 2,996 people died and more than 6,000 were injured, and losses to infrastructure, property damage, jobs and wages totaled more than $135 billion.
