For most, their destiny was to marry young, be a wife and mother. Those who worked usually worked as teachers, nurses or secretaries. The American writer Betty Friedan published, in 1963, The Feminine Mystique, which describes the frustration and even desperation of a generation of university-educated housewives who felt trapped and dissatisfied. The target: the Pontiff. At just 23 years old, Mehmet Ali Agca had already threatened the Pope in 1979, when he wrote a letter saying that, in the name of Islam, he would kill John Paul during one of his trips.
