책에는 두가지 이야기가 실려 있는데 첫번째, 우동 한 그릇의 줄거리이다. 해마다 섣달 그믐날 밤이 되면 우동을 먹으러 오는 두 아들과 엄마가 있다. 그들은 어려운 상황에서도 웃음과 용기를 잃지 않으며 노력했는데 그 노력은 우동 집 사장의 응원과도 같은 활기찬 인사가 있었기에 노력할 수 있었다 말했다. 우동 집 사장은 그들을 위해 섣달 그믐날마다 그 모자를 기다렸고 후에 그들이 성공한 후 섣달 그믐날 밤, 다시 그 우동집을 찾았다. 
두번째, 마지막 손님의 줄거리이다. 어느 한 조그만 과자집에 게이꼬라는 직원이 있었다. 과자 집이 문을 닫은 후 어느 한 손님이 왔는데 그는 임종을 앞둔 자신의 어머니가 그 과자 집의 과자를 먹고 싶어하여 늦은 밤임에도 불구하고 찾아왔다 말했다. 그에게 소중히 과자를 건넨 후 그의 어머니의 장례식에도 찾아가게 된 게이꼬는 손님의 마음에 성심껏 보답하려 눈을 맞으며 임종을 맞이한 손님을 위해 기도하고 게이꼬의 마음 덕인지 과자 집, 춘추암에는 격려 전화가 끊이지 않게 되었고 사람들은 그녀의 마음에 감동하게 된다.
