A Retiring Aid Worker Reflects On How To Repair The World

Joel Charny has been a humanitarian aid worker for 40 years, but one of the first valuable lessons he learned about the job was as a Peace Corps volunteer in the 1970s.

At 21, he was assigned to work as a sixth grade English teacher in a remote part of the Central African Republic. The students didn't have textbooks. Some kids had to walk 5 miles to school and back. And many did their homework under a streetlamp because there was no electricity at home.

"The devotion those kids had to learning was absolutely phenomenal. You don't leave that and say, 'I'm so great, look at all the amazing things I did.' You come away with empathy and respect for people."

That empathy and respect for others, says Charny, has stayed with him throughout his career working for relief groups such as Refugees International and Oxfam in countries like Cambodia, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Syria. In June, he retired from his job as the U.S. executive director of Norwegian Refugee Council, one of the world's largest aid organizations.

Talking about her favourite travel memory she said, "My ride to Cambodia recently, where four riders from different parts of the world met for the first time and helped deliver laptops to a small school in the Cardamom Jungle of Cambodia. Travel has taught me to navigate, to embrace every situation and handle any obstacle that comes my way."

Travel advice: "Dream big, work hard, stay humble and believe that you can achieve everything.

         TRAVELLING FOR A LIVING
        •Life On Board a Cruise Ship•

Life on a cruise ship is really a unique and unforgettable experience, very difficult to compare to a land job. Few jobs offer the chance to see so many places in the world, exotic views and meet so many people from so different countries. Obviously, after such
experience, you'll become a well-rounded
and worldly person, and get a better
understanding about global problems and
people from around the world and their
culture and way of life.

-The story and experience of Daniel Rios-

I have been working on ships since 2000 and I have to be honest with you, I love it; I have made a career out of the cruise industry to very senior position onboard in a very good company. I have suffered too, as I started in one of the lowest positions onboard (Galley Utility) and also
stopped working an average of 3 years on ships to try something different but returned because in my opinion
real life is not as amazing as ships, I
get pay to travel the world without any expenses, meet people from all over the world, get to taste food in the real place (Chinese in china or a pizza in italy) ... of course I work hard, with no days off
and many hours, but it is rewarding and I know what you thinking: how I get to know the world if I work every day without days off, well I get hours
off, so if today I go to the left, next week I will go to the right and the one after that straight in every port as we dock many times in the same places, I
take a bus, cab or walk, as usually I have between 2 & 4 hours free in port.
My experience has been very rewarding and I believe that if you focus, work hard, are smart, have faith and a little of good luck, the SKY IS THE LIMIT and when you get there ... remember your beginnings and don't be an ass.

Jana Janković

Nancy Agarwal | 30 | Delhi, India

Kicked cancer's ass, now making every day the best

How often do we postpone something we really want to do, thinking of a better time in the future to do it? Nancy, a lawyer from Delhi was diagnosed with cancer in her leg in the year 2013. After a long treatment when she was cured fully, she made a promise to herself that she will live life to the fullest and collect memories, so she can die with no regrets. She took her first solo trip in 2015 to Narkanda, Hatu Peak. It was a trip that changed her completely. She said, "It was Buddha Purnima when I was returning from my first solo trip. It was a full moon night and I felt like I could stare at the moon continuously in all its glory. I was admiring it wishing it should never disappear. Moon was glowing alone, aloof, unaware of the fact that people are staring at it. It did not need anyone else. It was complete on its own, within itself, complete in its own brightness, in its own shine. And I compared my life with that of the moon." She has been travelling since then and taking about 16 to 17 trips every year to different places.
Travel advice: "I would say keep travelling".
Hajdana Đurović

He has been away from home for a year already in which he travelled for a month in India, then two weeks in Indonesia and is currently working and travelling around Australia. He is moving to New Zealand in January and wants to live there for at least a year or maybe even settle down there.
Travel advice: "I would just advise people to go for it and never let anything hold you back. I think a lot of people put off travel if they can’t find a travel partner to go with them. It is such a liberating experience to travel on your own and even if you are shy or anxious you always meet people. I have been away for a year now and that was my biggest fear but out of that whole year, there have probably been just 2 days where I didn’t meet people!"

Milan Martinovic

Chandni Aggarwal | 27 | Kurukshetra, India
Believes that villages offer the most unadulterated peep into local life, whether it is in Ireland or India.
Chandani took up Semester at Sea (SAS) Summer voyage in 2014 – a journey that completely transformed her perspective on travel and life as such. On the journey, they studied on a ship that sailed from England to Portugal, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Poland and back to England for six months. She fell in love with the countryside of Ireland and realised that staying with local families, eating homemade food, celebrating their festivals, volunteering at the farms, and learning their cooking methods are some of the heartfelt and intangible souvenirs that one can take home from their travels. This journey inspired her to start her own travel company Transforming Travels that focuses on providing authentic cultural experiences in the villages of India.
Travel advice: "To begin with, I would advise that you start travelling in groups, family or with a friend. Every trip will increase your confidence and make you a little stronger. After a while, you won’t be scared to deal with unexpected situations and to travel alone. Do a little research on the culture and safety norms of a place before going. Ask your friends to connect you with someone in the city you are planning to visit. Have faith in yourself and humanity, and things will go well. If people discourage you, don't be afraid to tell them that if anything bad has to happen, it can even happen at home."

Thomas Cook was born in 1808 in Melbourne, England. The name of modern society is connected with his name. Namely, he was the first to realize that the railway, in order to be profitable, must be full of passengers. So Cook came up with the idea to organize the first trips, which he later wrote about. He fulfilled his goal on July 5, 1841. It was a group trip for people who do not drink alcohol. In fact, it was a day trip to a place under called Loughborough, where he held a convention. Cook also offered excursions for people with different financial means. Since he was also the owner of the printing house, he used the experience he gained in making the first propaganda materials. Also, there are various manuals about Cook, which served as an advertisement for Cook's larger business. This travel agency has helped a large number of people to discover the world and visit different destinations.

Danijela Batrićević
