• Thomas Hooker led settlers to the Connecticut River and built a town and named it Hartford
• Hooker left Massachusetts Bay because he felt the governor and other officials had too much power
• He wanted to establish a colony with strict limits on government
• The settlers wrote a plan of government called the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut in 1639: 1) all property owners were allowed to vote and 2) governor's power was limited
• Connecticut became a separate colony in 1662, with a new charter granted by the king of England

  • Slaves and servants where a huge help in the growing of this cash crop

  • It was named after King George II
  • Slavery was banned in the charter of the colony but in 1751, slavery resumed
  • Georgia made money by growing and selling indigo and rice
  • In 1752, Georgia became a royal (or crown) colony
  • James Oglethorpe was the founder of the Georgia colony and he wanted to resettle in America because he wanted a place for debtors and the poor 
  • To insure the settlers didn't become too wealthy, Britain put a 500 acre limit on land holdings per person

  •  Calvert founded the colony to make a refuge for Catholics 
  • Maryland was named in honor of King Charles I’s wife, Queen Henrietta Maria
  •  Protestants who were against Catholics moved in and caused conflict
  • A law called the Act of Toleration was created by Lord Baltimore in 1649 which made persecution of any Christian based on their religion illegal
  • In 1654 protestants who were against Catholics revoked the Act of Toleration 
  • Maryland was the 7th colony to become a state
