This article explores how the Taliban regime in Afghanistan has reinstated a system of law enforcement that not only polices women's dress and movement but sanctions violence against them under the guise of moral guardianship. This brutal control of women’s bodies and voices directly echoes the patriarchal constraints Juliet endures in Romeo and Juliet. Just like Afghan women today, Juliet is denied the right to choose her future. Her father threatens to disown her if she refuses to marry a man she does not love. The brutal control of the Taliban has let parents to force their children into marriages. It'a a repeated story isn't it? Juliet was forced to marry someone she does not love but she had the liberty to meet someone even though her parents disagreed. In the end both these stories end in a tragedy, they both kill themselves due to the laws and family. In both these cases, the family or the state has made the choice for the woman, never letting her voice her opinions or wants. It shows us just how messed up it is because what truly matters is how gracefully obedient they both are.

When reading this article, it was thought provoking of why women file for divorce more than men, linking this to Romeo and Juliet's theme of tragic love, I though of the growing rate of divorce around the globe. This form of tragic love is less physical like R+J and more of an emotional barrier, people who were once 'star-crossed lovers' are now separated, and some can think of this as tragic. "Across cultures and geographies, women who are economically able to take care of themselves… are more likely to initiate divorce" – Heidi Kar . This quote featured in this article shows that maybe this form of tragic love is not so tragic after all. It is true that the divorce rate is rising, but so is the rate of women independence. Maybe the cause of all this is now due to women having the capabilities to leave, not having to rely on the male for a stable income, and to be respected in society. In Romeo and Juliet, they both face expectations in society, deterring them from being with each other although in today's modern world there are less expectations for women after marriage, women earning an income, and women who file a divorce. In some cases divorce is a sour lemon, a human experience which shadows a tragic love, yet in others it can be a display of strength, independence, and freedom to break free of societal expectations, and in a way love yourself.

This prejudices allows men to hold higher positions of leadership, controlling the lower class of women. It is seen that women are more suited for homemakers and caregivers rather than providers. Data collected from United Nations Development program revealed that bias againsnt women with "9 out of 10 women still hold such bias today" with "half of people worldwide still believe men make better political leaders than women". Patriarchism disproportionalety affect women through the 'pink tax', consumer goods and other things costing more simply because of gender and sex. Although this can be seen as positive towards men, this doesn't mean that it benifits them. Partriarchy doesn't exist in all cultures but typically men are assigned at birth with their expectations, e.g "manly man". This system is created by men for men but to dismantle this ideology, the worth and bias agaisnt women must be challenged.

Gender roles within our modern-day society have been imposed by the traditional values of society during the 1940s and 1970s. These roles include women planning and accomplishing daily tasks of living, such as grocery shopping, washing dishes, doing laundry, organising the house, child care and cooking. Research shows that women have been imposed to complete these tasks for their families since the beginning of time. This issue is seen in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Juliet's role in society in Shakespearean England was to find a husband, have children and continue to care for them until she died. She was arranged into a marriage with Paris against her will. This essentially resonates with the expectations of women in the 21st Century. A women's worth is determined by her own decisions and values and should not be influenced by the 'traditional values' from 60 years ago.
