The segregation starts when Stella and her friends go to a seperate school and aren't allowed to go to some places except for a candy shop where black and white people are equal.  

Stella helped her friends and people 
But the kkk burnt down a families house  and made one of her friends hide 
So she helped  find her friend
Then the KKK stopped making trouble  for a while.

In august 28 1963 there was demonstration in washington D.C to protest racial  discrimination and to demonstrate  support for civil right laws  than being considered in congress. The march attracted  200,000 black and white participants  for Martin Luther King's “I Have a Dream”speech.
