Is this a weed or a plant we need to keep in our garden?

This was misidentified as Lespedeza. It is a cousin plant, known as desmodium or tick clover.

Lespedeza is a plant in the legume and pea family. Lespedeza is also known as shrubby bush clover. It is native to Asia, and it is not listed in our books on native MS plants. It is slightly invasive in the southeast US, but it is beneficial to our butterfly garden. Its nectar producing flowers are liked by butterflies and bees, and M.M. even spotted a caterpillar on one of the plants.
