Marta and her family live in Berlin, Germany, as the Berlin Wall is being built. One tragic night, her brother gets shot trying to cross the border. This makes her and her family outraged, so they just go on with their lives for a while, until they can't take it anymore, and plan to escape from East Berlin. There is also a different point of view. This point of view is from Kurt, and he is in East Berlin, while his parents have been moved to West Berlin, and he is also outraged and wants to see his parents, so he plans to escape also. At the end of the book they both escape and are happy.

The Berlin Wall started being built in 1961, and people tried to escape. GDR soldiers began patrolling the wall to make sure no one escaped. This stunned people on both sides of the border. Eventually, the wall was more than 27 miles long and included guard dogs, landmines, and barbed wire. In 1989, the GDR made an announcement and it made it sound like they were getting rid of the wall. Thousands of people from East Berlin rushed to the wall. The guards were confused, and opened the gates, and both sides celebrated and broke down the wall with sledgehammers. In 1990, the wall was officially broken down by the government and Berlin was united again.

This shows that relationships are very important and it shows how we have to keep reaching out and maintain our relationships with our loved ones.
