Ben Ratliff in this chapter speaks about those moments in a song that make you wonder "what was that?" These moments usually get you by surprise and seem to come out of no where. Sometimes it involves a pause in the music only to come back with for more of what it was giving you before. Other times this moment could involve a build up and can be more discrete for the listener. To explain a perfect momenta little more, it usually feels as if the song itself takes and creates a moment for itself that doesn't seem to be generated by the performers. Whenever this perfect moment is planned it's because it tries to portray something that neither the singer or producer could demonstrate with their resources. This element can be closely related more with drama rather than emotion and this is why I agree with this being an important element. This drama created most of the time keeps on bringing you back to a song because of the desire to figure out what it is exactly.

This quote helped me understand that whenever perfect moments are created, then it is not by the aid of the singer. If the singer is singing than it is being "back-grounded" by what else is going on during that moment. A singer usually doesn't contribute much towards what Ratliff is talking about.

This quote is Ratliff explaining how a perfect moment occurred in a specific song. The use of a lot of a action verbs shows how dramatic this occasion is and made Ratliff feel. He doesn't struggle so much to explain it but definitely needed extra words. This shows the complexity of these moments.

Ben Ratliff chose this song to explain an example of perfect moments. This song is a great example because upon starting it sounds very low and smooth then later transforming into something else. It loses and gains some instruments and changes rhythm (or so it may seem) which creates intensity. The moment he highlights as perfect is from 0:55-1:03 because of the "thin air" effect that is created that makes you wonder what's going on and why.

In this song, it starts out with a melodic, slow tempo with Kanye and The Weeknd taking turns speaking. The beat changes up a couple of times but the perfect moment doesn't occur until 2:49 just when you think it's over because of a sudden pause. Then the drums come back unexpectedly in a repetitive low two beat rhythm leaving you to wonder what's happening and what will happen next. It flows into a strange sounding vocals and all you want to do is go back to where the drums startled you.
