The title ‘When you see them’ would also be suitable for the book.

That title refers to understanding other people and walking around in their shoes. In this case it would refer to realizing that people from another race aren’t as different as some characters in the book might think. Racism is one of the main themes of the book, so the title would be fitting.

It also occurs in the book, in a conversation between Scout and her father:

‘’Atticus, he was real nice.’’

‘’Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.’’

★★★★✰

The book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a beautiful book about morals and injustice. It is about a wide range of topics, but is mainly about the conflict between blacks and whites in the 1930’s. The book also includes the smaller problems that kids deal with, like making up new games or participating in a pageant.

The main character of the book is an eight-year-old child, and the book is written from her perspective. You might think that would cause the book to be immature and childish, but despite it being viewed from a kid’s point of view, Harper Lee still managed to capture the seriousness of racism and other problems in our society. That Harper Lee was able to do that is very admirable.

Something like inequality is, of course, a very heavy topic. But because a child is describing this issue make it a little bit lighter to read and easier to follow. If the main character would have been an adult, it would have been way to heavy and the book wouldn’t have enjoyable.

However, the first half of the book can be a bit boring. That part describes the life of Scout, the main character. She lives a pretty normal life, and there isn’t really anything happening that you wouldn’t expect. Of course, the first half of the book isn’t completely useless, because it does make you understand Scout better, and you get a very good idea of what life was like a century ago.

Overall is the book very well written. Harper Lee has found the perfect balance between serious matters and the simple life of a child, and described it beautifully yet straight forward. It educates you about racism in the past, and how it is still very present in today’s society. The book is suitable for both young-adults and adults, so it can be recommended to almost everyone. To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic and deserves the praise it’s been given.

Comparison with 'Sympathy' by Paul Laurence Dunbar

In the poem ‘sympathy’ by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the writer expresses how he relates to a bird in a cage, and how he knows why this bird sings. The writer writes about the similarities between him and the bird, which is mainly being locked up. Just like him, the bird doesn’t have the opportunity to do what he is capable of and is unfree. He uses the cage as a metaphor for the lack of freedom and suppression that he is experiencing. He says the reason why the caged bird sings, is because he feels the desire to be free.

And just like in the poem, an important factor in To Kill a Mockingbird is sympathy. The book describes a contrast between people who are willing to try and understand others, and people who are not. Empathy is especially important when it comes to inequality. If everyone would understanding how others must feel in their positions or, as Harper Lee described it, walking around in their shoes could do wonders in cases like Tom Robinsons.

The poem describes the writers empathy for the bird, while the book shows the lack of empathy in our society. They both are strongly connected to that one essential word, and both show how important it can be.

This picture of George Floyd could be the cover of the book.

Because racism is one of the main subject of this book, we thought this cover would really be suitable. We wanted to respond to current events and since this happened today, it would also be a memorial to him.

The book describes the place of the Black men in society and the unjust legal system. As we can see this has happened for a long time, and surprisingly while living in 2020, this still happens. The picture will be a statement of the police brutality and the unjust against the Black community.

'' They got him just as he went over the fence. They said if he’d had two good arms he’d have made it, he was moving that fast. Seventeen bullet holes in him. ''

The seventeen bullets represent the time the police officer lay on George. It was both very unnecessary and deadly. The two good arms represents their skin. If he had two good arms he would survive it and if they were white this wouldn't have happened.

The comparison of 'Sympathy' by Paul Laurence Dunbar

I chose the poem Sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar. He is a Black author from the village Dayton. In this poem he verbalizes how he and the bird look a like and he feels why the bird is singing. ‘’ I know what the caged bird feels’’ He feels like the locked up bird. In this society the writer doesn’t feel free to express himself. He can’t do what he wants and is unfree. The cage symbolizes the opression that he experiences. The bird sings because he wants to be free, so does Paul Laurence. He wants this from out of his heart, and desires to be free. The poem talks about compassion, which is one of the main factors in the book. It talks about different kind of people with different kind of views of the people in the book. Not everyone wants to open their eyes and understand the struggles of the rest of society. Not everyone has the best with you and not everyone understands you. There are many people with a lack of empathy, so is in the book. Take as example the ‘’ wintesses ‘’ of the case of Tom. They don’t acknowledge nor feel pity for Tom. They have to walk in the shoes of the opressed to understand their struggle. Walking in the shoes of another is very important and so connected to this book and the poem. They show how important it is to symphatize with one another.
