Chapter 1: Repetition

In Chapter One of Every Song Ever by Ben Ratliff, he talks about repetition and what he believe is repetition. I necessary do not agree with him on repetition. The reason why I do not stand behind him, is because he makes a comment in the chapter about how repetition is not about doing something over and over its about doing it over but changing it up. I believe repetition is something you should do over and over, because the more times you do it the better you are going to get at each time you do it. For example, when listening to a song for the first time of course you are not going to know any of the words, but as you listen to it over and over you start to know the words and understand the story they are trying to tell. Another non-music related example would be track, I ran track in high school and we would run 450s every Monday to drop our time each week and by the end of the year we had all ran better times each week. Repetition I believe is doing something over and over to better yourself each time. In the chapter Ben Ratliff talks about a bunch of songs to use as examples. The one which caught my eye the most was the Kesha's song "We R Who We R", for people who know the song, know it can be really wordy and the words you think you heard the first time can be different then what they actually are and the song sometimes says the same lyrics over and over to help. When I first heard "We R Who We R", I did not understand anything she said, so I had to listen to it over and over to actually understand and know all the words. Another song which is very repetitive would be "One Time", by Justin Bieber because he says "one time" and some of the same lyrics over and over throughout the song therefore you can understand the song. That is why I believe repetition is doing something over and over.
