Catherine was born in 1778 in Dublin and was raised into the Catholic faith by her parents. Her father was a loving man who brought poor children to their family home on the weekend to inform and teach them the ways of the Catholic tradition. Catherine's father passed away when she was very young but had a positive influence on her life. After his death, Catherine lived with her mother, who taught her how to become a strong, independent woman.
When Catherine was almost twenty her mother passed away, so Catherine went to live with an wealthy, old, protestant couple. She cared for them for twenty years and during this time, she grew closer to God through prayers and helping the poor. The old couple both converted to Christianity before they died.
When they died, Catherine inherited their fortune, using the money to build the house of Mercy. This was a home and school for orphans and poor children. Other women joined Catherine and helped her establish the sisters of Mercy. On November 11th 1841, Catherine died.
During her lifetime, Catherine set up 14 houses similar to the original house or mercy and helped many orphans and poor families.

This story was written by Matthew who was one of four Gospel writers and wrote about Jesus' life since he was born. This story was set in the city of Jericho which is located in Israel, just to the North of The Dead Sea. At the time this text was written, good health was seen as a reward for ‘right living’, however having an illness, such as blindness, was viewed as a punishment. Also in this time, it was believed that healing could occur through the touch of Jesus. So for the audience of this text, Jesus touching a person to heal them is something that would have been believed. Because Jesus was considered a very important person, for him to stop, listen and help an inferior, blind person was a very interesting story for the public. As most would have ignored them as they were outcasts from society and they had got what they deserved because they had sinned. Jesus goes against the general attitude and stops and asks them “What do you want me to do for you”? He also shows compassion to them and heals them. The blind men were outcasts in society due to their illness, which lead to society viewing them as sinners. This explains why the crowd demanded them to be quiet when they called out to Jesus ("The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet”). However, Jesus listens shows compassion towards them and heals them. They then stand up and follow Jesus which is a sign that they have been accepted back into the society.

This passage is a miracle story about Jesus healing two men of their blindness. Jesus and his disciples were walking down the road with a large group of people following him. Jesus heard two blind men sitting on the side of the road shout at him, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!". The crowd of people told the two men to be quiet, expecting Jesus to agree walk past them. To their surprise, Jesus calls back to the men and asks them what they wish for him to do. The two men told Jesus they wanted sight. Jesus felt sympathy for them and touched their eyes and they were immediately healed.

This passage had a very important message for Catherine McAuley and it inspired her to set up the House of Mercy. The two blind men in this story can be related to the women that Catherine assisted. The women that lived in Catherine's village were severely deprived of basic human rights, just like the two men in the miracle story. Catherine gave these women back their dignity by letting them stay in her House of Mercy which is similar to Jesus curing the men of their blindness.

Mercy housing is an organisation that was founded in 1981 by the Sisters of Mercy of Omaha because of the lack of housing. It was funded with the initial investment of $500,000 and their non-profit corporation was established within 4 months. Mercy housing has been inspired by Catherine McAuley to live out the priestly, prophetic and kingly values. They dedicate their lives to helping others who are less fortunate and they speak out against poverty. Mercy housing now works to reduce the amount of poverty, build communities that are healthy and help all people develop their full potential. Mercy Housing has helped develop more than 37,200 affordable homes and is serving more than 128,000 people a day.

Catherine embraced the prophetic role by speaking out against the injustice for women. At the time, women were very poorly treated and were often left without a home if they had an argument with their husband. Catherine gave these women a place to stay and often would write about how this was unfair and needed to be addressed. Catherine would also speak out about child labour and often gave children small jobs to do around the House of Mercy.
