Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination by Anna Beth Colby

I chose this topic because I feel like there is so much stigma around mental health patients. Also i chose it because we as a society have been fighting for equality for a very long time and the fact that we still have discrimination against people who cant help who they are and how they think i don't think anyone should be treated like that. I think a lot could be discussed about this and there could be a light shown on this topic. How is stigma shown and what is the most predominant way of showing it?

There will never be true equality in the world. Even people who do not discriminate against others automatically form opinions about people based on looks and/or behavior. This is an evolutionary behavior that helps us distinguish between friendly people and enemies. Unfortunately this carries over into our social interactions and in situations that aren't even potentially dangerous. If we did not prejudge people at all, then we would be easy targets for crime and injustice. The tragic truth is that we will always have at least a little bit of prejudice towards strangers. The best solution is to not act on those prejudices unless you fear that harm will be done to you. Even in that case the solution is avoidance rather than discrimination.

I don't think it is possible that everyone would be treated equally because no matter what there is going to be at least one person who doesn't agree. Unfortunately that is just how people are made and as much as we want to say that it could be possible it just isn't. There isn't a single person in the world who treats everyone the same either. Everyone is treated differently because everyone is different.

Even if we wanted to create a perfect world, isn't our form of entertainment a from of competition such as sports and types of dramas and what about fights? Nobody just walks away when there's a school fight, in fact people try to get closer to get a better view. Even in a perfect world someone would still end up messing up and getting judged by it, I truly would love to tell you the answer is yes eveyone can be treated equally if we try hard enough, but in reality someone may say something honest and the other person may take it the wrong way
