Containers are used for many purposes, whether it is collecting sand, collecting water, paint, holding other collections such as blocks or leaves, containers are used in every day life. The learning in my photos shown are, collecting of sand and water, used to mix and experiment what happens with each natural element, to get dirty and feel with our hands and our toes what this feels like. Our sandpit box - a large container - to hold our toys every night, and to teach us self help skills and organisation. I believe this would provide an enriching learning experience for many reasons. Children would be able to explore and compare different textures, shapes, sizes, colours, smells, tastes. Children could learn fine motor skills while cutting the fruit and also how to use a knife safely. They could learn the importance of sharing while being encouraged to share their fruits with their friends. They could learn that fruits come in all different shapes, colour and sizes yet all of them are special in their own way promoting a sense of belonging and inclusivity. It could be used as an opportunity to teach seriation skills and counting. The possibilities are endless.

This is a common item that the children find in and around our preschool. With sticks the children can use their creative thinking in their play. They are an open-ended resource that can be enjoyed again and again in vast arrays of imaginative play. Sticks could be candles in a sandpit cake, swords, horses, fishing rods, musical instruments (by hitting them onto themselves or different items), they can be used for drawing or painting. The children can count with them, sort them and stack them. We have had children pretending to have a campfires or even twirling their hats in the air on the end of their sticks. The creativity is endless. This type or resource enables the children to use their communication skills, social skills, imagination, investigate their environment, numeracy skills, and sharing skills (not just sharing the resource but also sharing ideas of play).

The children collect them to roll down our tunnels, the slide or ramps. The bright colours stand out and all the children can find them. You can ask the to bring back specific colours like pink, green or yellow and they will. A couple of the older children like to gather them and put them in one place, a collection. They like to be asked by a teacher to do so, this is them helping. The children learn what colours are what and recognise them. They can use the balls to throw or roll giving the ball different motions, this would contribute to their hand eye coordination.

I have chosen fabric/material collection. The children will get to learn and explore the different feelings of different types of textures of fabrics, colours and shapes. It can help the child develop their fine motor skills if you put the fabrics into a “post it box” for the children to pull out and put back in again, they get the different colours coming out of the box but also different textures from different materials. The children also love it cover their heads with fabric/ material and play peekaboo with the teachers which helps stimulate the child’s senses, helps with their sense of humour and build gross motor skills.

I have chosen a photo collection.  Photos can be of different sizes, colours, objects, people and can be used for children to reflect on experiences and memories. Also, to notice and recognize who or what is in the photo. Children can use photos to be creative and make timelines of events or experiences, sort the photos in to different categories, make a collage or album. I believe photos can hold a lot of meaning for children as it is helps children feel like they belong and makes children feel proud and accepted when they have their photo taken and displayed. Children can explain what is happening in the photo which teaches children to describe and can lead to questioning. By having a photo collection, it teaches Children that each photo is different and special and that we value the experience by taking a photo. Photos can be a tool to show their parents and families and helps children feel empowered. A picture can say a lot, by looking at a photo of a child playing and smiling you can see that they are happy and enjoying what they are doing. I think it is a good learning tool to get children to identify objects by a picture/photo and not just the word as it helps children learn to recognize objects around them or at home. When children are looking at the photo collection it can also be a time for children to engage with each other and have conversations about the photos or to work collaboratively in making a photo collage or scrapbook.

The collecting of natural resources such as acorns and pine cones is a regular event for our tamariki and kaiako. We often use them for loose parts in the family corner or as a provocation in the arts space. It's not often that I don't find myself tediously picking tiny bits of deconstructed acorn off the floor, because it is just so innate to want to rip it to pieces in order to understand it (science at it's best). Acorns and Pine cones provide the opportunity to discover and explore texture, pattern, regularities, similarities and can provoke early numeracy such as sorting and classifying. Not only this, but natural collections such as this serve to soften and beautify a space when set in a meaningful way. The actual action of collecting natural treasures provokes questions and pondering about "why?"
