The border between Ecuador and Peru has been a source of conflict
for the past 150 years. In 1942, an unclear peace agreement, the Rio protocol, took
some 200,000 square kilometers from Ecuador and gave it to Peru. The poor
description of the new frontier left 100,000 square kilometers of the border
unmarked when an undiscovered river appeared where mountains were supposed to be. As a result of the lack of clarity of the Rio Protocol, the two nations have been fighting for the last 50 years, including two full scale wars and spasmodic frontier incidents.

Ecuador's shape is best desribed as the following:

Compact- Because it is a smaller state in which any part of the country is not far off from the center

Fragmented- Becasue part of the country (The Galapagos Islands) is broken off into another piece

Ecuador does not face issues becasue of it's shape.

Flag of Ecuador

General Francisco de Miranda essentially designed the flag
of Ecuador. Miranda described the colors he chose for his flag to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's theory of primary colors.

Yellow: The Sun and the Gold of the ancestors.

Blue: The ocean and the clear skies.

Red: The blood spilled by the heroes who died in the name of their countrymen's Fatherland and Freedom.

There is a long history of tension between the Ecuadorian government and indigenous groups over oil drilling in the Amazon. Residents of the northeastern region have been locked in a two-decade lawsuit over pollution caused by Texaco in the 1960s and 1970s. In the past, companies that have tried to explore several of the leases slated for auction have met strong resistance.
