‘garlic growing green” this conveys a  use of alliteration. Alongside green is regularly associated with growing and nature. Perhaps lev exclaims he hopes for a bright future 

The garlic is exclaimed to grown at the 'edge of the road' .The word 'edge' implies that there is very little growing there, and any present is almost growing off the road.  Emphasizing that there is very little hope in his country because how most of the hope is not even on the road. The adjective 'wild' can also emphasize how little hope there is due to the fact that it seems unknown to them
