Indian Act Podcast

On September 5, 2024, we were given the Indian Act podcast, which reviewed Canada's Indian Act. For the assignment, we were to create two good questions about the Indian Act.

I can see my development in understanding media forms when my answers interpret the media in its entirety and when my questions further inquire whether the Act uses "Good Moral Character" as a stipulation. These two points show how I understood the media/podcast and thought deeply enough to create questions to further my understanding.

Some media skills I need to improve on for this assignment are better citing the media/podcast. Throughout this assignment I didn't timestamp or link the information I obtained to the podcast which is a major weakness, thankfully I've gotten better with this over the semester like in our Indian Horse essays where I used citations correctly. Looking back on this assignment I can see my overall improvement.

Overall, I believe that this assignment was great. It provided a valuable introduction to media and enhanced my understanding of it. It was also my first educational podcast, which I found interesting. I can see myself exploring similar podcasts in the future.

2-Minute Book Talk

On Oct 25, 2024, we were assigned an oral communication assignment where we would explain our experience with the first novel we read in the class.

After rewatching the video, I realized where I need to improve my oral communication skills. Within the video, I maintained eye contact in short bursts where I should be looking at the camera the whole time while slightly looking at my book.

A strength I noticed is how I used my hands to show the novel and made gestures to enhance my storytelling. Additionally, I kept my voice energetic to avoid sounding monotone or robotic.

In conclusion, I can improve parts of my oral communication skills. However, even though I could've done better I'm glad to see some of my communication skills improved because of this presentation. It served as an excellent opportunity to enhance our oral communication skills.

Notes From Reel Injun

On Oct 9, 2024, we were assigned a question sheet for a film called Reel Injun.

My media skills for this project demonstrate my ability to prove my answer effectively. I referenced a quote from the film that connects to Hollywood's deeper portrayal of indigenous people. Additionally, my media proficiency is evident in my concluding statement about the American perspective, which portrays Americans as good and Indians as bad.

I believe a step I can take to improve my media skills would be to expand on my points with more detail from the media itself, like in the film where they shot the Indigenous people because they thought it would stop them from going into the afterlife, I could've further added onto that idea where maybe because of the time they were in they wanted to torment them. Overall I believe to improve my writing I should further explain the media.

In conclusion, the Reel Injun assignment offered a valuable examination of the historical mistreatment and racism against Indigenous peoples. It reminded us of the lessons we can draw from history to address past injustices. Furthermore, the assignment enhanced my media skills and boosted my confidence in my abilities.

Contributation To Book Meets

This is a book meeting of Katherina Vermettes' The Break in my group.

I am highlighting this meeting as it reflects my strongest participation. I developed an effective strategy for preparing for the book group by staying on top of the reading requirements, taking notes on the specific questions for the meeting, and having a copy of my book to reference quotes or cited elements.

My strengths in oral communication include my voice and tone. During meetings, I ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute, maintaining a balance so that my voice does not overshadow others.

I believe a step I can take to enhance my oral communication is to focus on expressing my ideas clearly by transforming my notes into comprehensive and informative sentences. I believe that incorporating quotes into my notes for meetings and presentations will help me better integrate the book or topic into my conversations.

Overall I believe that my oral communication skills, not only described in my book meeting, are very good but can use some improvement in terms of high-quality information.
