They are nature’s way of cleaning house to allow for new possibilities. The increased human presence has shaped how forests have evolved, but not the basic benefits of forest fires. When the fires rage out of control, as they did in the Okanogan Complex fire, the damage is extensive. However, those in forestry often set fires intentionally to generate the positive results described above.
