Activity: creating the setting – MYP textbook page 17

The warm spring breeze flits in through the open window of the cottage, dragging a bunch of dried leaves and fallen flowers with it. Freshly cooked bread sits on the center of the kitchen table, neatly sliced in half. The lingering smell of the previously eaten food wafts through the air, so strong you could almost taste it. The chairs stand scattered around the table, quickly pushed aside by the children as they ran outside to play. Clothes hang inside an old cupboard in a bedroom, wrinkled with use. Books are stacked up on a desk tower above the writing materials sitting on the table’s polished surface.

Outside, the air is filled with the smell of pine trees and newly grown flowers. The wind sends the water rippling in the lake by the cottage. Two children skip along the path leading to the village, occasionally stopping to pick up a flower or look at a bug they’ve never seen before.

They travel to the village, where people with suits and corsets walk the streets, carrying bonnets and umbrellas and what not. A carriage or two are parked in the square, patiently waiting for their next passenger. The man selling the daily newspaper stands at the corner of the streets, shouting offers at passerby. They stop to buy them, the jingle of the coins in their purses heard from a mile away.

— misha 7c

Great pillars of stone, rose to the sky. A giant dome with a pristine chapel stood proudly upon the ground. In the inside, they were decorated with glittering mosaics and frescoes depicting the town’s beliefs and also just pieces of art like birds, people, and plants. Romanesque buildings and churches littered the city on Florence on this bright and sunny March morning in 1751.Many workers were busily going about their day – men with clean white tunics, vests, earthen coloured breeches, and hats; women wearing long fitting embroidered dresses with their hair tied up in a bun. Some were painters, overjoyed to be paid by the nobles, while some were not so lucky, toiling around the city, looking for at least some kind of work to satiate their family’s hunger. From the huge expensive looking mansion of a noble, Maria Gizleta strode out, walking proudly with her face up, holding a painting she had made.

Wide streets laced with shops and cafes on either sides, shimmered with the light of red, yellow lanterns, the tall street lights only helping them illuminate the path. Huge giant houses made with a mixture of wood and cement, topped with thatched or tilted roofs stood beside the street. They had large windows and balconies a sign of western architecture. How do you open this door. Normally doors slide- ouch. A push. These open with a push. In our village mot houses opened with a sliding door. The food over here is different, it’s all yoshoko, I am lucky to got a bowl of udon noodles. Shops over here open till late, back home we only had one shop, that closed at 6pm. People over here dress funny. Some are wearing, I don’t know what. It seems like a thick fabric that covers till a person’s waist or thighs, almost like a haori but thicker. Underneath, they have white something, with a very thin scarf raped around it. And a tighter version of hakama, for lowers.

Louise Caroline Alberta, a royal 21-year-old girl, had just risen from her rest on August 29, 1409. A note from her father lay next to her, notifying her that he had left the country to work on a huge, gorgeous ship. Louise's father was the richest and most admired man throughout Europe. Louise was a nice girl who had the extraordinary ability to predict events before they occurred; as a result, she was considered insane and refused to leave her mansion. Louise adored animals and had a huge collection of them, spending the most of her time with them. Something about the ship her father had boarded gave her the uneasy sensation that something was wrong. Her mother had received a letter with updates on her father's journey as she left her room. She hid behind the door after hearing her mother read the letter aloud. Her father had been held hostage by other Europeans, and there was a bomb on board that could go off at any minute...
(169 words)

-tarini <3

I strut slowly down the bustling streets of New York as I twirl my parasol. I hear cars go by, bells ringing from inside the shops, the soft, cool breeze that gently grazes my face, and my favorite noise, the jazz music on the trumpet coming from the street performance nearby. I reach into my purse and flick a dime into the street performer’s hat that he set on the ground and keep walking.

“Fuh- Fuh-ree sample, mm- mayum?” A man in colorful suspenders walks up to me and holds out a tray of little chocolate chiffon cakes on a toothpick. His smile curves unpleasantly in a nervous manner and the tray is shaking so violently the cakes are almost falling off. I simply nod and try a piece. “Delightful! Where can you get more of this, sir?” I say after patting my lips down with a handkerchief and give him a reassuring smile. Hopefully that would get the point across that I am of no harm. “‘Ight acoss’ dat stur-eet deyah, mayum.” He replies, pointing across the street with a shaky hand. I nod at him and head towards it. All the confusion in my brain has been replaced with pure excitement as I skip down the street to the bakery.

I press my gloved hands and my cheek against the glass and marvel at the window display that showcased the delicious pastries and cakes. I swallow to stop my mouth from watering and enter the store. As the door closes, I close up my parasol and walk over to the counter. I use the few seconds of waiting to observe the store. Bright sage green walls, light wooden chairs painted pink, a jukebox in the corner playing some more jazz, mixed wood floors, and a couple coat and hat racks. What a pleasant sight it is.

A handsome young woman wearing a pastel pink apron and holding a rolling pin walks up to me with a rosy-cheeked smile. “‘Ello, Madum. How may ‘Ah heylp ya?” she says as she puts her rolling pin down and washes her hands. She is definitely not as nervous as the polite sample man, but I notice that she avoids eye contact with me. “Hello. I’d like to have a slice of the.. Chocolate chess pie, if that wouldn’t bother you, ma’am.” The woman nods and hands me a pretty white box. “For ah nickel, madum.” What a steal! A nickel for a chocolate chess pie! I hand her a nickel and ran out with my box, satisfied with my voyage.

The cold morning breeze flies through Buckingham Palace. Huge towers made of stone, huge chandeliers in every room light up brighter than the stars. Elegant artwork on the stairway, magnificent paintings of olden kings and queens. Was an amazingly beautiful day in London, women dressed in heavy brocade, stockings, tight-fitting doublets, long billowing dresses embellished with pearls and jewels, knee-length trousers, stiff linen collars, or ruffs, and elegant feathered hats. As I entered the Buckingham palace an awfully kind old lady welcomed me. She was magnificently stylish, she looked royal ended up being THE QUEEN! She gave me a tour of Buckingham Palace. It was really well decorated with all the portraits, chandeliers in every room, and shining canopies on every bed. As I walked through corridors, I had just realized how big the palace really was. The tour was excellent, we then sat down to have our supper. It was really good, but there was an incident that occurred while I was on tour.

To be continued..

170 words
-khushi

Dear, she is the light of my life and the fire of my loins. My soul, my sin. The tip of the tongue travels three steps down the palate to tap on the teeth at number three. In the morning, she was Lo, simply Lo, standing four feet ten in one sock. She looked like Lola in slacks. At school, she was known as Dolly. On the dotted line, she was Dolores. But she was always in my arms. Was there a forerunner? She did, without a doubt. In fact, she might not have existed at all if I hadn't fallen in love with an early girl-child one summer. In a seaside princedom. When, oh when? That summer, I was about the same age as she was when she was born. A murderer can always be counted on to write in a fancy writing style. As she got ready wearing her periwinkle Knee length A-line dress with puffed shoulders with pure white satin elbow length gloves before she left, she had put on her dark brown oxford shoes. As she started he walk you could hear her heels clicking and clacking . her mind was flooded with thoughts of will I ever be good enough, when suddenly loud noise snapped her out of it, it was a loud jazz band playing at a club when she peeped in the store thorough the blinds, she saw everyday dancing and singing along. she still had time left so she decided to check it out. She went and sat down when suddenly hey called a random stranger on stage, IT WAS HER!! She was invited to sing as she sang with her heart and soul, everybody was clapping along, and dancing and it looked like they were having the best time of their live. as the thought suddenly struck her mind, HER AUDITION !!! she ran out faster than the speed of light. And thought how she would want to redo this day all over again.

The sun was out, providing warmth to the citizens. A bunch of kids were skating at the skate park, enjoying and laughing. He parked his vehicle at the parking lot, getting his suitcase which had the bomb with the timer which was waiting for it to start ticking. He had planned to denote it at 11 am but then changed his mind and decided the due to be at 9. But before starting it, he went to the nearby store and grabbed some gum to chew on. As he got out of the store looking left and right before crossing the road; then he walked a few blocks, reaching this old-looking building and scanning it, he simply smirked at it, the Murrah federal. He knew the building consisted of a large number of people. His target was right in front of him, he let out a chuckle; looking at the people entering the building. He went toward the entrance and placed the suitcase a few centimeters away. He started the time for 6 minutes; enough for him to escape safely, leaving 168 innocent people lifeless.

To be Continued...

   (200 words)

· Alicia Shajan 7c·

January 13th, 1889. Father’s birthday
I miss him very much

Father died years before railroads were a thing. If only he was still alive, we would enjoy Paris together… Me, Margaret, mother, and father.

I wanted to wake up feeling fresh and happy, and grateful for, everything. But the thought of father makes everything a lot harder.

I opened my window drapes as I hear my sister play Beethoven's greatest work, Fur Elise, on the piano, again. Yes yes, I know, that song could start history, but Margaret always fails to play that piece beautifully.

“Alright, Marg it’s time for you to stop playing and get ready for school,”

“Elizabeth would you please stop speaking for once, it really bothers me”

“Just like when you try to play Fur Elise and fail every time.” I’m not wrong though.

Mother has been really stressed out lately. I know everybody drinks but last night, she finished our final bottle of champagne. Although the view of the approximately finished Eiffel tower still takes my breath away, I still miss looking at it with my father.

We would always recreate the tower in drawings and complete them every morning. Now, I completed it without him.
