Escape From East Berlin by Andy Marino covers two stories and timelines of people who escape East Berlin. 12-year-old Marta Dietrich in 1961 experiences her brother's death by swimming from the trapos (transit police). Then, she overhears her cousin, Harry, constructing a plan to ride a train through the ghost stations of Berlin in order to escape to the West. Police start to catch onto the plan and the Dietrich family becomes a target. However, 17-year-old Kurt Muller in 1989 was split up from his parents when the wall went up. This left him with his brother, Franz, who is part of the police force. Kurt does not support the East Berlin government but is constructing a plan with his grandfather to escape. Lastly, there is ties between both timelines and inevitably end up being welcomed into West Berlin.

The article All the Ways People Escaped Across the Berlin Wall by Erin Blakemore talks about all the different ways people used to escape from East to West Berlin during the Cold War. From tunnels to hot air balloons, people went to great lengths to escape East Germany. Some even risked their lives by jumping from buildings or using homemade zip lines to cross the wall. Despite the dangers, many were successful in their escape attempts and were able to start new lives in the West. The article highlights the determination of those who sought freedom during a dark period of history.

Guided Question, "Did history unfold accurately in your book?"

Yes, for the most part, history did unfold accurately because of the swimming scene in Escape From East Berlin. As described in the article, "This Man Swam Across A Canal To Escape East Berlin, Then Went Back For His Friends" by Deborah Cole and "All the Ways People Escaped Across the Berlin Wall" by Erin Blakemore both cover a story from a man named Hartmut Richter who swam across the Teltow Canal in Brandenburg in order to escape to West Berlin. This man's story associates with Stephan Dietrich's story from Escape East Berlin by Andy Marino because Stephan was also a teen swimmer who attempted to cross the canal. Stephan got killed by the trapo but Hartmut did not. This is just one of many scenes that portrays historic experiences accurately.

The poem explores the impact relationships have on us, because it talks about the power of connection and how it can transform us. It tells us that when we find someone who truly understands us, someone who is a kindred spirit, it can be a life-changing experience. The poem reminds us that relationships can bring us joy, comfort, and strength, but they can also cause us pain and heartache. Ultimately, it is up to us to decide what kind of impact we want our relationships to have on us. Whether we choose to let them help us grow and learn or to hold us back is entirely up to us.

This piece, "Dads do it all, even hair." by Snezhana Soosh connects to the essential question by showing that relationships are complex and affect a person through family. As pictured above, a gruff single father is tying a ribbon around his ballerina daughter's hair. This artwork contrasts the stereotypical characteristic based around fathers and daughters and conveys a scene where love is very strong. The relationship between the two may affect each other because people normally do not see the fragile side of fathers.
