Then, she overhears her cousin, Harry, constructing a plan to ride a train through the ghost stations of Berlin in order to escape to the West. Police start to catch onto the plan and the Dietrich family becomes a target. However, 17-year-old Kurt Muller in 1989 was split up from his parents when the wall went up. This left him with his brother, Franz, who is part of the police force. Kurt does not support the East Berlin government but is constructing a plan with his grandfather to escape. Despite the dangers, many were successful in their escape attempts and were able to start new lives in the West. As described in the article, "This Man Swam Across A Canal To Escape East Berlin, Then Went Back For His Friends" by Deborah Cole and "All the Ways People Escaped Across the Berlin Wall" by Erin Blakemore both cover a story from a man named Hartmut Richter who swam across the Teltow Canal in Brandenburg in order to escape to West Berlin. This man's story associates with Stephan Dietrich's story from Escape East Berlin by Andy Marino because Stephan was also a teen swimmer who attempted to cross the canal. Stephan got killed by the trapo but Hartmut did not.
