What will you bring forward from COVID-19?

I will bring forward the ability to be flexible and think outside the box. Over the past year, we have learned to adapt to a new environment and learn to find a way to move forward without certain luxuries and conveniences we are used to having. We've learned to maximize different working and learning environments and some have experienced more isolation that others. I will take the lesson of appreciating each day for what it is and knowing that even in difficult situations, we can find a way to move forward gracefully. I will take the lesson that there is more than one way to achieve a goal and be open to new possibilities.

What will you leave behind from COVID-19?

I will leave behind the isolation and the feeling of working in a silo. I will embrace working in person with friends, colleagues and classmates and remember that teamwork is what got us through this difficult time.
I will also leave behind the idea that we have to function as we always have and the idea of doing things a certain way because we don't know of other options. Creativity and flexibility have been two things I have seen emerge from this pandemic and that is something we should work toward. The idea of keeping the status quo should now be a thing of the past. I have seen this start developing with more companies working toward work from home options.

What leadership lessons can you take from your experience this year?

As a leader, I've learned to see the resilience in my teammates and learn more about their strengths. Although I believe we are always stronger as a team, I've witnessed individuals shine during this time and certain people step up as leaders and reach out to others who needed help. I've seen leaders within my own department show kindness and compassion to their employees who have had to balance alternate work environments while also functioning as stay-at-home parents. I think the kindness and compassion is something I will continue to draw on as a leader and I will continue to reach out to my employees and connect with them. This also plays into being a servant leader, which is something I strive to be.

How can you maintain work-life balance?

Maintaining a work-life balance begins with understanding priorities and knowing your own limits. Having a clear schedule and to-do list helps me keep track of what I need to accomplish and the date by which I need to complete each task.
I have found that maintaining an appropriate work-life balance makes me feel more relaxed and accomplished both at work and in my personal life. When I put the important things first and I schedule time appropriately (including time to take care of myself occasionally), I feel much more at ease.
