He humanizes the perspective that he had racial bias himself and normalizes that as something we all have inside. I think he wants readers to look back on their own upbringing and socialization to reflect on instances of our own bias. Being "not racist" is a passive form of, and mask for, racism. Acknowledging and naming racist policy is more focused than using terms like systemic/institutionalized/structural racism. The conversations we have had about inequities, slavery and change has been so powerful. I am glad we can now teach the then and the now. I found myself needing to pause and process what had been written. I never thought of the definition of being racist to include passive behaviors, but it makes sense.
