Robert E Lee was the leading general of the Confederate states in the Civil war. So let’s start with some basic facts about him.First of all he was born on January 19,1807.He died on October 12,1870.He was born in Stratford Hall,Virginia. He died in Lexington,Virginia. There is a college renamed after him called Washington and Lee
University. Some of his extended family members included a president,a Chief Justice of the United State ,and signers of the Declaration of Independence. At 18 he enrolled in West Point Military Academy.Where he got second in his graduating class after 4 years without a demerit and got perfect scores in artillery, infantry, and cavalry. After graduating he married the granddaughter of Martha Washington,George Washington’wife. In 1846, Lee got the chance he had been waiting for his whole military career when the United States went to war with Mexico. He served under General Winfield Scott. General Winfield said after the war the government should consider taking out a life insurance policy on the commander. Some time after that Abraham Lincoln offered Robert E. Lee the spot of general in the Union army, but Lee declined saying he was too dedicated to Virginia to lead an army against it.When the Confederacy asked him to be general.Robert E. Lee replied yes.The first battle he fought in he took control of the army of Northern Virginia and drove back the Union army in the Seven Days Battle near Richmond. The battle of Antietam and Gettysburg gave the Union a new hope. When he was forced to abandon Richmond. He surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia. He died from a massive stroke. In 2017 the government in Virginia decided to rip down a statue of him there was a revolt and one person died.😱

Robert E Lee had many famous quotes but maybe the most famous of them all was “I suppose there is nothing for me to do but go and see General Grant, and I would rather die a thousand deaths.” He said this quote when he was about to go and surrender to Ulysses S. Grant.Another popular quote is “The education of a man is never completed until he dies.”Lastly this is another famous quote that he said “Whiskey: I like it, I always did, and that is the reason I never use it.”Which I think he means that if he used it he’d never stop drinking it.
