In Shakespeare's, Taming of the Shrew, the author uses the current social expectations of women to represent the theme of women should be submissive and quiet towards other men, which is fought against with the rebelliousness of the female characters in the play.

This quote from the beginning of the play shows the opening feelings of Lucentio and his view on women. He states that Bianca is suitable to be a wife because of her obedience and silence towards her father. Unfortunately for Lucentio, Bianca later becomes more aggressive. At this moment the reader can conclude that he will not focus on studying, for he will try to woo Bianca using her submissiveness to his advantage.

Quote: "Why came I hither but to that intent?Think you a little din can daunt mine ears?Have I not in my time heard lions roar?... And do you tell me of a woman's tongue,That gives not half so great a blow to hear As will a chestnut in a farmer's fire?Tush, tush, fear boys with bugs!" (Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 101-113)(Shakespeare, Taming of the Shrew)

This short speech made by Petruchio is made to show off his assertiveness towards women and also presents his taming skills. He states in this passage that men can measure their masculinity through their hierarchical relationships with their wives. In other words, it means if a man can not contain his wife, he is more feminine than masculine. The author added this speech into the play because it shows how men were supposed to be the more powerful person in relationships. It was bad to not be able to be more dominant than your wife. Shakespeare uses imagery to compare all his manly and daring experiences to controlling a woman in a relationship.

Quote: "Well, I say no. And therefore, for assurance Let's each one send unto his wife,And he whose wife is most obedient To come at first when he doth send for her Shall win the wager which we will propose." (Act 5, Scene 2, Lines 67-71)(Shakespeare, Taming of the Shrew)

Near the end of the play Petruchio decides to hold a competitions between all the men's spouses. This competitions consists of the wife's competing to be the most obedient. Petruchio confidently adds a wager on his wife that she'll win. This shows how the men just use the women as some sort of game to get some money, like a piggy bank or ATM. This part of the scene shows how men and society tend to use women in relationships. This quote gives a very negative view on women of the time, showing how they can be used by men.

Quote: Be patient, gentlemen. I choose her for myself. If she and I be pleased, what's that to you?'Tis bargained 'twixt us twain, being alone,That she shall still be curst in company.I tell you, 'tis incredible to believeHow much she loves me. O, the kindest Kate! (Act 2, Scene 1, Line 321-326)(Shakespeare, Taming of the Shrew)

When all the men come to Baptista's house, Petruchio tries to get Kate to agree to marry him. They excuse themselves from the main conversation and Petruchio begins to convince her. They argue and Kate clearly does not want to marry him. Being the more important person as a man, Petruchio lies and tells Baptista that Kate loves him and wants to marry him. This shows that men can manipulate women to get them to agree or do stuff they don't want to do. Because of this controlling of women, Petruchio and Kate will have a bad relationship and it may end in a divorce. This shows that having power over women is not a good thing to have, especially in the long run.
